Dear donors; The pandemic changed our program as it did with our whole lives.
Schools and Universities closed since the very beginning and mentors and mentees stopped attending the program at their campi. However, some of the matches were able to keep on doing activities and having contact through the internet, we know at least half of the matches continued in contact and some were creative enough to do activities on WhatsApp.
Sadly, not all of the matches have access to the internet whenever they want, most of them need to borrow a device to contact their mentor and some don't have internet access at home. But still, the program continued in many places.
We are now getting ready for the next school year, we are preparing some updates so we can continue with the program in the Universities and schools once they reopen. We know how important our program is for vulnerable kids and we are doing our best to find the best way to reorganize and improve our program so the matches can be in contact even thou they are not personally together.
This pandemic changed us all, but it also made us stronger and more united.
For Peraj this is the middle of the year. The mentors and their buddies have been working together for a couple of months and the activities have become more personal. The one on one activities are now addressed to increase the buddies personal skills. Some times mentors see their buddies need more help in some personal areas so they pay more interest to support them.
We have been working closely with the Universities to give proper follow-up and training whenever needed. All of the matches have gotten their T-shirts. They all need to wear them while being in Peraj, and they really enjoy it. Some have painted their shirts with special messages or some have left them the way they received them. We want them to feel part of the program and also to keep their shirt for as long as they want. We have seen exbuddies wearing their Peraj T-shirts when they go pick up their little siblings to the Campus.
Once again, thank you for your support and your donations!
The new school year is being kicked off the ground and we are excited to see mentors signing up for the 2019-2020 Peraj mentorship program. We are extremely excited, this new school year we will have 2,800 Peraj mentors from 73 Universities spread all over the country.
Over the following weeks, mentors will be going through their training, learning about the program and what it means to be a mentor, a role model and support. Meanwhile, teachers in differentelementary schools will start the selection of students who will be participating in the program. We know, everybody needs a mentor, unfortunately, there are more elementary students needing and wanting to be a part of the program than mentors available. Therefore teachers have to go through a selection process in which the kids that wouldbenefit the most from the program are the ones that get picked.
By the end of the month, buddies and mentors will be ready to meet, this is one of our favorite moments and one that we look forward to every school year; when buddies and mentors meet for the first time; to see the excitement in both of their faces, we get to be witnesses of how their relationship evolves from buddy-mentee to in a lot of cases long term friendships. How by simply changing their perspective of what the world can offer, they literally start changing their lives.
We are grateful for your continued support and trust in the program, together we are making a difference in the lives of many boys and girls.
