The Philippines was one of the countries where Typhoon Odette (international name "RAI) wreaked its havoc. Negros Oriental, where Foundation University is located was not spared. The eye of the typhoon hit 33 kilometers aways from its location leaving communities without food, clothing, shelter and the convenience of electricity.
Dumaguete City did not have electricity for more than a week. It rendered people helpless at this time where it cannot connect to the world despite the existing technology available. But because of the existing solar city on campus that generated power, the university opened its gates to allow the nearby communities to charge their electronic devices and even fetched potable water for drinking supply. All this was made possible because the university's solar panels which withstood the typhoon was serving up to 50% optimal capacity.
Of course, it did not discount the fact that the Omicron virus was surging. The university also ensured though that all safety protocols it implemented were still adhered to, to prevent another problem from arising. Nevertheless, the community was grateful enough to have made them survive the week with a little convenience. It wasnt much but it helped a long way.
The goal is to make the whole campus 100% solar powered. It continues to seek GlobalGiving and its generous donors to be able to fullfill the other 55% with the purpose of not only reducing the carbon footprint but be able to serve the community in anticipation to crisis such as Typhoon Rai.
