The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Service Administration has declared that the El Niño phenomenon is occuring in the months of March, April and May 2024.  This phenomenon is a climatic event that has a significant impact on energy prices in many parts of the world, one of which is the Philippines where Foundation University is located, being a tropical region.  A series of climatic effects from the abnormal warming of the Pacific Ocean waters is triggered  which can surely affect energy and its distribution.

Extreme weather events and abnormal rainfall will affect hydroelectric plants as well as photovoltaic solar farms.  However,  it cannot affect the solar energy as much as that of hydro electric power. Although abnormal rainfall can lessen the energy storage from the sun.

This phenomenon impacts the energy prices to sky rocket which will then be passed on to consumers.  Foundation University, while striving to achieve its goal to be fully solar powered is enjoying 45% of the energy from the sun in its day to day operations.  It is now one of the most reliable energy sources  most especially that the upcoming months will exprerience extreme weather changes.

Foundation University is one of the institutions in the Philippines that is very forward thinking in diversifying energy sources due to its reputation as the most eco-friendly school in the country.  It has forecasted that in time this phenomenon called El Niño is crucial to the world.  The university has explored and implemented the solar power as one of the mitigating solutions to ensure its continuous operations, at lesser energy costs at the same time enjoying a reliable source of power.
