Dear Donor,
We are very happy to let you know that on 27 and 28 April 2012, 300 poor, meritorious students received solar lamps. There was much excitement and joy among the students, their teachers, parents and the community at the handing over ceremonies which were held in the two remote islands of Maipith and K-Plot in the Sundarbans. The students, from Grades Seven to Twelve were from eight local schools on the two islands.
Hasina Khatun, a recipient of a solar lamp from K-plot Island said, “I am happy to receive the solar lamp. Earlier I would have a lot of trouble studying by kerosene lamp. The smoke would get into my nose and mouth. I hope other students will also have this privilege."
The students who received the solar lamps were initiated into the Green Rhinos Program, an exciting new initiative of ASED which aims to create 10,000 youth nature leaders by 2013. To know more visit http://www.globalgiving.org/projects/create-10-000-youth-nature-leaders-in-india/.
We sincerely thank you for being a partner in this endeavor which is greatly benefitting students in a remote and fragile ecosystem!
With warm regards,
Diti Mookherjee
