TWO WEEKS SUMMER WORKSHOP Venue- SETU Shiksha Jyoti Kendra, Nithari Village; Noida Period – 10 May 2011 to 28th May 2011 , Participants – 230 underprivileged children from the age group of 6 to 14 years - 130 children from organising school SETU , and 100 from outside schools.
Objectives: The objective behind the workshop was personality and skill development of the children in a fun filled environment. It was an initiative to bring out their latent creativity and hidden talents with the help of teachers and volunteers. The purpose was to improve the learning and speaking skills of the children through various communication methods like poetry recital, story telling , improving speaking and writing skills in English. Teaching them various arts and crafts like Calligraphy work, drawing & Sketching , making paper bags and puppets to name a few.
Every week had a different theme to work on, the 1st week was personality development through reading , writing , speaking . Writing small skits and enacting them. This helped in breaking inhibitions, learning to work as a team and bringing out leadership qualities in the children . Each student participated with so much vigour and enthusiasm that it succeeded in even drawing out the meek and introvert children from their shells.
The 2nd week was dedicated to skill development. With the help of arts and crafts teachers from participating schools , the children learnt to make poster and cards, slogan making . There was a painting competition held in one of the days and it gave the children an opportunity to showcase their dreams and aspirations through their paintings. But it was the puppet making workshop taught by our own teachers ,that won all the children over hands down, exploring the magic that occurred as they created their own puppet friends, and then made them come alive... right in their own hands.
The last week was kept for various competitions , like debate, quiz , best out of waste, collage making etc. Not only were the best performers awarded prizes but each and every participant was given a gift token for participation and a certificate.
At the end of the workshop, it was a real sense of achievement to see their increased level of confidence. Their silent appreciations said it all, GIVEN A CHANCE WE TOO CAN SUCCEED, this was the message written on their faces and smiles. Thank you Bhavna , Prabhakant and DS Group / Stella and Pepsico for your support to have made it possible for us , to bring smiles on 230 faces.
