Setu Shiksha
Jyoti Painting Competition 2012 :
School Children of Noida paint to support education of their
underprivileged brethrens: SETU organized The Fifth Setu Shiksha Jyoti Inter
School Painting Competition on the 20th.of January 2012 at  Delhi Public School Noida.

There were over 300 students from 28 schools across Noida who participated in the competition. The purpose of the competition was to create awareness towards the education of the underprivileged so that they could also lead a life to build a great nation. The students created painting to generate resources for the education of their underprivileged brethren.

The Competition was inaugurated by the five children Pragya from Sakham, Ritimaan from Noida Deaf Society, Deepti from Evergreen School, Anju from Durga Public School and Rujul from Lotus Valley School.

The yearly shield for 2012 was awarded to Ryan International School of Noida and the second and the third prize went to DAV School and Delhi Public School Noida respectively.    

Prizes were also awarded to individuals in two categories. In Category I class 5 to 7 , Rujul Dhalaria of Lotus Valley School, Noida claimed the first prize, the second went to Sakshi Somya of Delhi Public School Noida and third prize went to Jasmine Bhalla of Mayoor School Noida. In category I class 8 and 9, the First prize went to  Javed Ali of Sardar Patel School Noida, The Second prize to Nitya Devga of Bal Bharti School, Noida and Third prize to
Nandita Mishra of DAV School Noida. In category II Anuj Kumar from Saksham took the first prize and the second and third prize went to  Biprita Bala of SOF and  Tapas from Setu Shiksha Jyoti Kendra respectively.


In additional Consolation prizes were won by Payal Mishra from Nai Disha School, Nasir from Setu , Apoorva Kumar and Sanjeev Kumar from Noida Deaf Society , Rajal Kumar from Sardar Patel School and Said from DPS Shiksha Kendra

Mr. Ravi Kaul, Chairman, SETU Foundation, wished all the children a bright  future and also said that this will be an annual event and SETU will continue to strive for the development of the under privileged so as to impact society. As a gesture of Goodwill he presented Saksham, Noida Deaf Society, SOF, Om Foundation and Moser Baer Trust with Gift Hampers. 

Republic Day Celebration at Setu Shiksha Jyoti Kendras: The students and teachers of SETU have exhibited their patriotism through celebration of Republic Day. On a chilly 26th January morning all the students and teachers of Setu gathered together in the school premises to celebrate the Republic Day. The celebration started with flag hoisting by the Chairman Mr. Ravi Kaul and the National  Anthem. The importance of Republic Day was emphasis while Students sang patriotic songs. The celebration came to an end with a small quiz with students by the Chairman Mr. Ravi Kaul. Finally sweets were distributed to all students. The functions where held at all Kendras of Setu.  


Blood Donation Camps: On 3rd Feb 2012 Setu had organised a blood donation camp at RMSI in collaboration with Rotary Club Noida.  Employees of RMSI had shown a great enthusiasm during the camp. Similar Camps were organised at NIIT ON 15/3/2012 and 23/03/2012 and at Dell on 14/02/2012. This helped collect     units of blood during the camps. The camps were organised in collaboration with our partners for the event Rotary Blood
Bank Noida.   

Cancer Awareness workshop Aegis : On 7th February 2012, cancer awareness camp was organised at AGEIS. 
Our chairman Mr. Ravi Kaul conducted sessions on cancer awareness which was attended by more than hundred employees of AGEIS.  Setu team pinned pink ribbon to their employees and they had contributed to create a
corpus for the treatment of Cancer patients.  

Dell Volunteering Visits: In January 2012 Dell team visited Salarpur Center. They conducted painting competition for class first and colouring competitions for KG and played games with them. On their next visit they distributed prizes to the winners and colours to all the children. This was for the first time when visitors had conducted some
activities at Salarpur center so the enthusiasm level of the children as well as of the volunteers was worth seeing.

On 10th Feb 2012 Dell team visited Nithari Shiksha Jyoti Kendra. They conducted Hindi poetry competition class wise. They had good time with children and facilitated them on the occasion. After that they were taken for a conducted tour of the Setu computer lab and given a small presentation on SETU. 


Cambridge School Volunteer Visits : In the month of January 2012  Cambridge School students visited Nithari
School for Hindi story telling activity. They came prepared with puppets and demonstrated in front of our students and taught them how to do the same. This was an interactive session. Students enjoyed a lot and at the same time learnt the art of making puppets. This activity was further taken by our Setu teacher for other classes.


Health Camp : A series of Health camps were organised across all locations of Setu. 
On 17th February General Health check up camp was organised at Nithari for our students and staff helped of doctors of district hospital Noida. A Para medical team conducted the camp. All the students and staff along with teachers were examined and were provided medicines like Multi- Vitamins, Folic acid, Calcium and medicine for de-worming was also given to them. Around 115 people were benefited from this camp.

On 18th Feb 2012 immunisation camp organised at Nithari center for  students in collaboration with district hospital. ANM was appointed for this job from the hospital. Around 65 children and support staffs were immunised with TT. An alternate team also facilitated  another immunisation camp at Setu Salarpur for 30 students. At this center community people were also involved. Around 28 children were immunised by the ANM was appointed from
the district hospital.

On 22nd February 2012 General Health camp was organised at Salarpur where community was also involved along with Setu children and staff. Around 100 children including their parents and siblings were examined by doctors. Medicines like, iron calcium, vitamins and albendajole tab were also provided to them . 

Setu Launches Skill Centre for IT Skilling of under-privileged Youth particularly Girls. - Young Girls from disadvantaged communities face barriers in joining the formal economy – lack of quality education, skills, social confidence, communication and language problems and often issues with grooming and etiquette and also
parental pressure to marry and keep house, to community pressure to only take ‘respectable jobs’ and limitations on being allowed to travel ‘too far’ from the family home. Setu shall be offering Courses from the NIIT Foundation in Basic IT Skills enabling the first step towards employability. This course shall enable a respectable, much sought after and prestigious career for such young boys and girls; not only does it provide a  decent salary, but also fits in with raising a family and provides her with status in her community. 

We aim to enroll and train 400 young women at our Nithari Campus Noida in 2012 .

Mr. Ravi Kaul, Mentor and Chief Trustee, SETU wished all the children a bright  future and also said that Setu shall continue to strive for the development of the disadvantaged so as to impact society.  He also announced launch of MY VILLAGE ACADEMY CAMPUS which shall be a single window learning and development facility aimed at providing education and employment oriented skills the youth of India. My Village Academy offers:

  • Personality Development and Grooming
  • Information and Communication Technologies related Skills
  • Vocational and Employment oriented skills
  • Adult Literacy Programs
  • Women Empowerment Skills

He said "We also welcomed all to Join in the Campaign to SECURE THE FUTURE OF OUR CHILDREN AND YOUTH and help in empowering disadvantaged young men and women to become professionally trained and Support SETU to inspire, share, educate, skill, enrich, elevate, develop and motivate."

 

Tie up with Liqvid on English Speaking : Corporate support for setu reached a new milestone with Liqvid providing content and Trainer the trainer training to provide English Communication Skills to the children at
the setu Shiksha Jyoti Kendra Nithari and Salarpur. The Bilingual course in Hindi and English shall help improve the English Communication skills of the students.

Tailoring Classes: With Support from Navratan Foundation Setu embarked on its Women empowerment program. A tailoring institute was set up at the My Village Academy Campus at Nithari help self employment/ employment of the women thru an Industry recognised tailoring Certificate.

ALP- Adult Literacy Program: designed by The CBFL programme teaches reading skills to illiterate adults, between the ages of 18-50  years, who have not attended a formal school. It uses animated graphics and a voiceover to explain how individual alphabets  combine to give structure and meaning to various words. The settings for the lessons are visually stimulating and crafted in a manner that learners can easily relate to blended with spoken word and written language, and  an appealing graphical interface. Setu acknowledged the support provided by TCS in facilitating launch of this program by providing the content.

Upgradation of facilities at Nithari : The facilities at the Setu Shiksha Jyoti Kendra were upgraded with a creation of a new lunch room and library of the students. New furniture was arranged for both for the library and lunch room and library books were provided by our donors Teksons and Pearson. 

A water cooler was also installed to provide Potent drinking water to the children especially during summer months.

On 29th January 2012 Setu children participated in a painting competition organised by Sri Radha Krishan Saraswati Balika Vidya Mandir in Nithari Sector 31. Our children won first and second prize in the competition.


Meet Kusum our Senior most Employee Kusum Sharma, Senior Facilitator, at Salarpur Center stays with her family at Salarpur. Her husband is an accountant in a private company. She is blessed with three children, her elder son is studying MBA first year, daughter is doing BBA second year and youngest son is in class IX. She is
associated with SETU since December 2007. Her contribution for the growth of Setu is commendable. She joined when Setu was in its initial stage. Her involvement started with developing curriculum and teaching aids for the out of school children, field work which included in identifying the children and place for starting center at Salarpur. According to her this is a very different organisation as compared to others. She had worked with many other
NGOs in Noida.  She says activity based learning is the main focus of this school. Scholarship facility for the girls is also a unique system in its self. In this organisation lot of space is given to the staff to share their views and express their grievances openly and not only that they all are addressed which is very rare. According to her each member is given opportunity to grow in their professional life by attending trainings and seminars. Staffs are given chance to go out of city for picnics cum trainings.

She always stand with organisation at the time of need even if it is a holidays or has to work till late evenings.  She feels it’s a noble job and gives her great satisfaction working with underprivileged children. She has seen Setu growing and she also looks her future growth with that. She further says “mein setu ke liye huin aur Setu mere liye”. She says her family is very supportive and they see her future growth with Setu.


Also meet Shalini, the Youngest Setu Tuition Teacher Shalini, is a tuition center incharge of J.J. Colony. She
stays in sector 15 with her mother who is a house wife; she has one elder sister and two younger brothers. One of them is doing law and other one is in class 10th. Her elder sister and younger brother are physically challenged. She
lost her father at an early age. She has done  NTT training from Khajani and doing B. Com final. She has been teaching at Setu from last two years. In her batch there are ten school going girls of different classes. She says before joining Setu she was very introvert but now she has developed confidence and openness in her self. She is
doing B. Com final and completed her NTT training from Khajani.

Before joining Setu she was taking tuitions at home but for underprivileged children initially she was little uncomfortable but now she says there is no difference in teaching them. In fact they are more curious to learn. Along with studies she also teaches art and craft. During holidays also she takes classes if a student asks her to do so. All her students share their family problems with her. She really works hard for their benefit.

She feels this type of tuition facility should be given to more and more girls who really want to do well in their life and because of financial problems they didn’t get such support. 

 

Let's all Applaud Aarti on her success Aarti student of Class VIII, Government  School, Naya Bans, Noida comes to SETU tuition center at J J Colony in the evening. She is a regular student and very hard working. This year she got double promotion based on her performance. According to tuition in charge she is very sincere and good in
studies. At home she doesn’t get support for her studies. But her mother and elder brother gives her moral support. Her mother is a housewife and father is a rickshaw puller. Her elder brother collects garbage from Greater Noida. Her younger sister is a school dropout so Aarti is the only child in her family  who is seeking education. She is very satisfied after joining Setu tuition classes.  She says she gets support for English, Hindi and Maths.
