Setu Shiksha Jyoti Kendra - ( Formal School)

 1. Meena Devi is the grand mother of Jyoti, a pre-nursery student in the Setu Shiksha Jyoti Kendra. Jyoti’s father is a farmer in some remote village and her mother is handicapped and has no time to care of Jyoti. Her parents wanted to throw her because she is a girl child. Jyoti is now taken care by her  grandmother who earns the living by working as a maid. Meena Devi feels that the environment in the school has helped Jyoti in moral boosting.

With tears in her eyes she says “Pehle toh Kabhi bolti hi nahi thi lekin ajj kal thoda thoda baat karne lagi hain, thoda khush bhi rehti hain,sab app hi ki dua hain”. Meena’s only aim is to see Jyoti settled well in life.

2.  A story of a Father!!! At the 3rd Saturday, Parent’s Teachers Meeting, Shyamlal Kumar is regular in attending the PTM. A driver by profession, with minimum income of Rs.4500. He has high aspirations for his daughter Sushmita, who is studying in class 4 in the SSJK. He wants his daughter to be a journalist and when asked for the specific reason he said that he drives the car of a female journalist and sees his daughter in her place. Sushmita is a bright student and loves to draw. She is regular in her studies and a daddy’s girl.

3. Mr. Ajay Sharma, father of Barkha Class 2 and Honey Class 4 at the SETU Shiksha Jyoti Kendra Nithari, is a tailor and his wife Aarti Sharma is a homemaker. He was looking for a good school to educate his daughters and his search ended at the SETU Shiksha Jyoti Kendra. According to Mr. Sharma he is anxious to attending the PTM (parents teacher meeting) on every third Saturday of the month because of his daughters. He feels the teachers are supportive and takes immense care of his children. While having a chat with him he says he is a proud father as his little daughters also teach him English which they picked up in the school.

4. Sonu Mondol, of nursery class and son of Madhavi and Chetan Mondol is mischievous. Madhavi was worried about the education of her children as Chetan is the only earning member of the family and has five members to look upon. Chetan is a rickshaw puller and Madhavi is a homemaker. Sonu’s sister Babita Mondol is also studying in the SETU Shiksha Jyoti Kendra, Nithari in Class 4.

Madhavi feels her children have started respecting her because of the environment in the school. In low voice she says “pehle toh yeah hamari itni izzat nahi karte the aur bahut batamizi se pesh aate thee” When asked whom she likes as a teacher and their behaviour towards them she giggles and says “Mujhe Principal madam zada pasand hain, waise sabhi acche hain”

5. Lets meet Savitri Devi, a house wife, and mother of Keshav and Madhav Singh. Her husband Ram Narayan Singh is a driver and gets little opportunity to even interact with the children. Keshav is studies in Class 5 and Madhav in Class 3 of the Setu Shiksha Jyoti Kendra Nithari. Savitri reveals that her children were really reluctant in going to the school in their village and how they complained of their teacher who used to beat them however after studying in the SETU Shiksha Jyoti Kendra both the children has shown extreme improvement in their education. She also feels their behaviour is good and also that the children are really happy coming to the Setu Kendra.

6. Lets help his education and help him become a scientist

A pint sized boy used to come and stand by the school gate and watch the students during assembly, lunch hours and even during class hours for the past one year. On being approached by our teachers he used to run away.

Annu Singh, who finally made up his mind and entered the Setu Shiksha Jyoti Kendra gate on 15-03-2010 had something different on him, he could not read the text given because of his vision problem and when further asked he poured out his emotions of how important “schooling” means to him. He wants to become a scientist and invent things which would be magical in his words “chamatkari chize” but since it was very difficult for him to read, and write, the teachers at SSJK Nithari took him to an eye specialist and helped him. On 20-03-10, he came in again with his new reading glasses and confidently told us that now I can read Madam please put me thru the admission test.

Annu was able to read and solve all the maths and successfully cleared the entrance test. Alas!!! Annu is a SSJK student, who is studying in class 1^st although he suffers from DAY BLINDNESS!!! , Litte did we realize about the zeal of a father less child with a paralysed brother and a Mother who does petty household jobs for an earning in 7 days time started dominating affairs in Class – studies, class discipline , helping others …., Another Phunsukh Wangdu in the making.
