Beginning in January 2021, our "Send a Child to School" initiative will support the education of 120 children from some of the most disadvantaged communities in Ghana, namely, Osunu Dompe, Ahomahomasu, Besebuom & Tafi Mador. Over the next year, we will work closely with these children and their families, helping them to purchase school uniforms, stationary, books and other vital educational resources. In addition, we will be providing mentorship to each of the 120 children & their families.
According to recent research by UNICEF, more than 400,000 children in Ghana are not enrolled in pre-primary education. Recently, the Ghanaian government has implemented numerous policies to make education more accessible. While attendance in school has increased dramatically, enormous challenges remain. Many cannot afford to attend school, with their families unable to support them financially. Others remain at home, working with their parents and contributing to the family's income.
We will be supporting 120 pupils with logistics such as books, uniforms, shoes, school bags, pens, pencils, erasers, masks, etc. to enroll or continue their schooling. We will conduct community sensitization workshops in four rural communities on children's non-school attendance to 1,500 community members to ensure more awareness of the essence of child education. We will improve hygiene education for 1,500 community members by providing workshops on safe hygiene practices during COVID-19.
The project will reduce the number of children who will be left out of school in four rural communities allowing them to escape poverty and become change agents in their own communities.
