Happy to come back after vacation

Dear Kind Hearts

Greetings from team SANKALP

New session for 2019-20 began on Monday, 10^th June after 6 weeks summer break. Once again we witnessed happy faces of children eagerly looking forward to come to Sankalp after the vacation.

During vacation period our building got new paint. All security measures like installation of CC TV cameras, Fire Alarms, emergency exits from upper floors in case of fire and recharging installed Fire-Extinguishers have been completed.

In order to limit the total strength of children within 55, we’ve admitted 5 new children in this session. So the total strength now is 54 of which 14 are Girls and 40 boys. Team Sankalp is all set for another successful academic and training/therapy session.

One set of uniform consisting of a T-Shirt, a Pant and pair of Socks & Shoes has been given to all the children while new children have been given two sets. Like every year, it has been given at no cost to the children as they come from underprivileged section of the society.

Pediatric checkup for all children is already done while ENT, Dental & Ophthalmic checkups are scheduled within next month.

New initiatives planned during the year:

Psychological Assessment to be completed in April to prepare IEP before new session
Increase in timings by half an hour daily
Replace the old van with a new one
Expanding utilization of smart classroom
Buy a Xerox Machine for giving vocational training to pre-vocational group of children
Appointing special child as music teacher for taking Music classes 3 times a week
Introducing basic computer training on trial basis to some children
Improved Progress measurement/monitoring (by adding more analytical)
Skill up gradation of educators through in-house workshops/interactions with outside experts
Engage more volunteers and Continue expanding Outreach as well as Creating Awareness

In October we had started music classes on trial basis for some children who we found were interested in music. We learnt about Manan who is a special child himself but he is very good in music. We engaged him to teach music to children on trial basis. The results were quite encouraging so we decided to employ him as a regular music teacher from this session. This is a win-win situation both for Sankalp as well as for a special child Manan who gets the opportunity to earn.

We always look for volunteers to join our cause. An awareness talk for homemakers who wanted to contribute something to the society in their spare time was therefore, organized by our student interns Aditya Choksi & Yashraj Solanki. They briefed them about Sankalp’s activities and different possible ways in which they could help us. We got positive response and four of them have agreed to spare three hours a week each for volunteering to teach art and craft to children.

In order to providing vocational training that doesn’t require high skill to our pre-vocational group of children, we’ve purchased a photocopier machine. This training will give them an opportunity to be productively engaged and may open a door for future earning for them. The machine has been donated by wife of one of our board members.

Sankalp children celebrated International Yoga Day at Akota Garden by doing various (Asanas) Postures, laughter yoga & Meditation on 21^st June under the guidance of our Yoga trainer.

Birthday for May and June born children and teachers was celebrated on 26^th June. At Sankalp we believe that children must be made aware of contemporary issues. Environment is one such issue which requires urgent attention. They were explained the need for protecting our environment and the importance of trees. From this Academic year we’ve therefore, started an initiative to plant a tree on every Birthday celebration to make it meaningful.

Dear Kind Hearts,

Greetings for the team Sankalp!

During the first quarter of the year, besides undergoing their normal in-house regular training/academic/therapy sessions as per their Individual Education Plan (IEP), children also participated in following activities:

These were:

Festival of Kite Flying (Uttrayan) is celebrated every year in Gujarat by everyone with lot of enthusiasm and fervor. Sankalp children also celebrated the same in the nearby Akota garden on 12^th January. All the children enjoyed kite flying, dancing which was followed by lunch and had lots of fun.
Sankalp also organizes in-house sports for its children every year during winters. This was done on 25^th Jan at a nearby garden. The occasion was also clubbed with celebrating the Republic Day of our country as well as celebrating the birthday of all the children born in the month of January. All the winning children were given gifts. The sports activities were followed by cake cutting for Birthday celebration and dancing and merrymaking and lunch before returning home.
Children were invited to give a dance performance at another school’s annual function on 3^rd Feb.
International women’s day on 8^th March was celebrated withno lectures no big talks...We celebrated and inspired womanhood in a dignified, disciplined and joyous manner through creative work. Thanks to volunteer Mrs. Vaishali Dave for teaching our members to make beautiful art piece (Tea Coasters). Sankalp Children also participated with our female members, teachers, therapists, volunteers.
A picnic cum field trip was organized on 23^rd March. All the children were taken to a nearby spot at Poicha in a bus. This place also has a beautiful “Swaminarain Temple”. Children visited the temple and had lunch there.
Volunteers of “Happy Faces” another NGO of Vadodara visited the Centre and spent some times understanding our work and also interacting with the children. They celebrated birthday of one of their members by cutting the cake and served some snacks to the children.

We had informed in our July 2018 report that we have installed a projector system and are in the process of getting few animated educational films made for training purpose. We’re happy to inform you that we got nine films made and the entire smart class room has been fully operational since last six months. During this period we found that this training method is very effective and children are enjoying and paying more attention and learning various topics through animated films much better.

We have a practice of getting children examined by a clinical psychologist to ascertain their intellectual abilities, level of disability and their training needs. This is required also for preparing their Individual Education Plan (IEP). Till last year we were doing the assessment in June and the IEP was being implemented from July. This year we decided to get the psychological assessment done before end of the session in order to prepare their IEP before we break for summer vacation so that we can start their training as soon as the new session begins. Accordingly the assessment was completed on 31^st March. Sankalp’s special educators and therapists will then prepare the IEP before close of the session.

The academic year is coming to an end on 12^th April. The entire team is busy compiling progress report of the children which shall be shared with the parents between 8^th to 12^th April. I shall share the summary of progress in my next report with all of you.

Welcome 2019

Dear Kind Hearts,

Greetings for the New Year 2019 from SANKALP team! Hope you all must have had a wonderful holidays and New Year Celebrations. Team Sankalp wishes that the New Year brings good health, peace and prosperity to you and your family!

We at Sankalp give special attention towards physical development of all the children. We encourage them to participate in various sports, outdoor activities and performance before large gathering. It essentially serves three very important purposes. One, it enhances the self-confidence and self-esteem of children which in turn motivates them to learn and do better. Second, it raises the morale of parents and family members of the child when they see that their child is not only able to compete with other children or perform in public but is actually winning or receiving tremendous appreciation from entire audience. It develops hope in them that their child definitely has potential to become independent to a reasonable extent. Thirdly, it sensitizes the general public towards differently abled members of our society, generates much needed empathy towards them and leads to their acceptance and integration into the mainstream of society thereby improving the overall happiness index of the society.

In pursuant to the above philosophy, Sankalp Children were taken to McDonalds for celebrating the Christmas. Three of the children who were winners in the district level competition, qualified for state level sports organized by state Government in December. Two of them, Dhruv & Sailesh won prizes in different events. On the last day of the year, children participated in sports meet organized by the “Friends Society” for differently abled children of different schools of Vadodara. Three of Sankalp’s children, Meet, Sakshi & Jahnvi won prizes in different games. Five children Bhavin, Sudhir, Sailesh, Pruthvesh and Amin took part in the “Vadodara International Marathon” on 6^th of January and walked for one Kilometer. Sailesh, Pruthvesh and Amin also participated in the musical band “Drum Circle” played at the Marathon.
