Greetings from SANKALP team

New session for 2018-2019 began on Monday, 11th June after the summer break. We once again witnessed happy faces of children who were eagerly looking forward to come to Sankalp after completing their vacation.

We had many requests for admission in the new session at the same time one old child has left Sankalp from the new session while 3 children had stopped coming from the middle of last term. This year we decided to divide the children in three separate groups. The first group consists of regular batch having 42 children of the age group 5 to 18 years. The second group is more focused on functional and pre-vocational activities and has 5 children in the age group of 19 to 23 years. Third group consists of 4 children above 21 years all of whom have reached their peak and no further development is possible but they wish to come for socialization as well as to maintain their physical status quo and avoid age related deterioration. So this year Sankalp has a total strength of 51 children of which 12 are Girls and 39 boys. Team Sankalp is all set for another successful academic and training/therapy session.

With the success of our one to one E-Education module in which we use audio-visual method of training/ teaching, we decided to extend this methodology to the entire class by making a smart classroom from this new session. For this purpose we have installed a projector which is connected to a laptop and an audio system. Animated educational films are shown on a screen and an interactive session with the children is used for teaching them. Children are finding it very attractive and easily understand the topics. We have downloaded many educational films that are available in Hindi/Gujarati on the net besides we are also in the process of making few animated films on specific topics that we want to teach children but no films on the subject are readily available in Hindi/Gujarati.

The cost towards projector, cabling and film making has been sponsored by a donor, an old laptop has been donated by a well-wisher while screen and speakers were donated by our two of our board members. Since the laptop is quite old with very limited memory and Windows XP operating system, it doesn’t support many films that require the latest VLC media player. We’re therefore, looking for a better and newer model of laptop with sufficient memory and Windows 10 OS.

International Yoga Day was celebrated on 21st June by the children at Akota Garden. They were taught various (Asanas) Postures & Meditation. Each one of them did these postures to the best of their ability.

The annual psychological assessment for all the children to record the disability level and also to compare it with last year to check the progress and also to design the IEP (Individual Education Plan) and fix the targets for each child for the current session has already been completed on 24th June and the plan has been put to action.

A birthday celebration for all the children and staff born in June/July was celebrated with lot of fun, dance and indoor games followed by cake cutting and special lunch on 4th July.

In order to bring environment awareness, children were explained the importance of plants in our life. They participated in the “GREEN VADODARA” campaign and planted trees on the road divider in front of the Centre on 6th July. These plants shall also be maintained by Sankalp children.

The first parent guidance session was also conducted on 22nd July. Parents were informed about the activities that will be taken up by Sankalp during the year. They were also briefed about the ”Child Protection Policy“ being followed at Sankalp and were given advice on the precautions to be followed by them for their safety while the children are under their care and custody. There was also a guidance session on “How to keep children engaged at home”. This was followed by an open Q & A session to address parents’ concerns. Parents were also given IPR (Individual Parent Response) which contained specific instructions to be followed by them at home. They were informed that at the end of every quarter, they will be called to record how much instructions have been followed by them during the quarter to check the level of parent’s involvement. Their active participation will have weightage in calculating child’s progress in different areas and it will also be reflected in the child’s annual progress report card.

Dental and Pediatric checkup for all children has been completed in July, while ENT & Ophthalmic checkups are scheduled within next 30 days. Vitamins suggested by the pediatrician has been started for the recommended children.

We are pleased to inform all of you that Sankalp’s coordinator and trustee Dr, Sonal Shah was given “VOCATIONAL EXCELLENCE AWARD” for 2017-18 in recognition of her services through her vocation to the community by “ROTARY CLUB of BARODA Sayajinagari on 4th May 2018. Such recognitions encourage and motivate all of us at Sankalp to do our best.

Greetings for the team Sankalp!

Education and Training session for the year 2017-18 was completed on 20^th April and Sankalp was closed for summer vacation until 10^th of June.

A parent meet was held on 22^nd April to share the progress achieved by their children against the targets fixed at the beginning of the year and to guide them as well as to inform them about steps to be taken by them during vacation.

It is very encouraging for us to note that as a result of getting properly planned & appropriate child specific program through carefully crafted methodology all children at SANKALP have demonstrated progress in targeted areas in varying degree as per observations made by special educators/therapists:

The only child who achieved less than 50% was very irregular and her attendance was less than 42% during the year. We are sure that had she attended more sessions, her result would also have been much better. Of the 6 children who achieved less than 60% of the target, three of them are having severe conditions needing continued training and rehabilitation plan on long term basis, while one is not much interested in academics with hardly any support from her parents. Remaining two of them have potential to improve but one had to undergo surgery of his legs and remained absent for couple of months and the other joined late in the second quarter. However, we’re confident that both will do much better in the coming years if they attend regularly. All the parents agreed with us that their children have improved.

Sankalp also organized a workshop on development of pre-vocational skills in teenage children with developmental disabilities on 11^th Feb. An expert Counselor from Mumbai Ms. Darshana Mehta and Dr. Krati Shah Clinical Geneticist, Vadodara were the key speakers. They emphasized the importance and necessity of prevocational training in teenagers with special needs and also guided parents with various techniques that must be adopted by them for developing such skills in their children. Ms. Mehta herself has a daughter with Down’s syndrome. She shared her own experience of how she has been able to groom her daughter to lead an independent life. Besides parents of Sankalp children, few outside parents also participated in the workshop. All parents enjoyed the interactive workshop with both the speakers. The occasion was also utilized to felicitate 10 differently abled children who had given their voluntary services for packing the Vadodara Marathon Kits in January this year which was very much appreciated by the Team Marathon.

We at Sankalp believe in encouraging these children for participating in various outdoor activities, Interaction with society and also performing before large gathering. It essentially serves three very important purposes. One, it enhances the self-confidence and self-esteem of the children which in turn motivates them to learn and do better and make them happy. Secondly, it raises the morale of parents and family members of the child when they see that their child is not only able to perform in public but is receiving tremendous appreciation from entire audience. It develops hope in them that their child is improving and he/she definitely has potential to become independent to a greater extent than they had imagined. Thirdly, it sensitizes the general public towards differently abled members of our society, generates much needed empathy towards them and leads to their acceptance and integration into the mainstream of society thereby improving the overall happiness index of the society.

Greetings for the team Sankalp!

During the quarter, besides undergoing their normal in-house regular training/academic sessions/ therapy program as per their Individual Education Plan (IEP), children celebrated festivals like Christmas and Kite flying (Uttarayan) besides participation in various other outdoor activities also. These were:

“World Disabled Day Rally in the city on 3^rd December that was organized by the committee jointly formed by 12 different institutions working for disabled persons in Vadodara.
Drawing competition organized by Kilol School on 9^th December. Sudhir got 2^nd prize.
Drawing competition by Billabong School during World Inclusion Week Celebrations. Sudhir & Ravi Got prizes in the competition.
Sports organized by Bal Bhawan Society & friends Society, the local TV news VNM and Friends Society. One of our children Ravi got 3^rd prize in “Running” at Bal Bhawan Society, Sohana got 3^rd prize in Friends Society sports and Team Sankalp got 2^nd prize in VNM sports.
Dance program at Billabong School, L & T Darshan Ladies welfare Association and Spandan School.
Marathon organized by “Vadodara International Marathon” on 7^th Jan 2018 as well as by Sai School.
Festival of Christmas was celebrated at Sankalp by children. On this occasion one of the children was dressed as Santa Clause and Christmas tree was decorated. Birthday celebration of all children born in December was also done along with Christmas.
Festival of Kite Flying (Uttrayan) is celebrated every year in Gujarat by everyone with lot of enthusiasm and fervor. Sankalp children also celebrated the same in the nearby Akota garden on 12^th January. All the children enjoyed kite flying, dancing which was followed by lunch and had lot of fun. The celebration was followed by lunch.
Sankalp also organizes in-house sports for its children every year during winters. This was done on 25^th Jan at a farm house. The occasion was also clubbed with celebrating the Republic Day of our country as well as celebrating the birthday of all the children born in the month of January. All the winning children were given gifts. The sports activities were followed by cake cutting for Birthday celebration and dancing and merrymaking and lunch before returning home.

We at Sankalp believe in encouraging these children for participating in various outdoor activities and performing before large gathering. It essentially serves three very important purposes. One, it enhances the self-confidence and self-esteem of the children which in turn motivates them to learn and do better. Secondly, it raises the morale of parents and family members of the child when they see that their child is not only able to perform in public but is receiving tremendous appreciation from entire audience. It develops hope in them that their child is improving and he definitely has potential to become independent to a reasonable extent. Thirdly, it sensitizes the general public towards differently abled members of our society, generates much needed empathy towards them and leads to their acceptance and integration into the mainstream of society thereby improving the overall happiness index of the society.

We are also participating in Route to Good initiative of GlobalGiving. Under the program, a matching volunteer from their partners “Dentsu Aegis” visited Sankalp from 14^th to 16^th February and studied Sankalp’s activities/financials/resources/capabilities etc. We will now have a 6 months structured program in which they will be providing strategic support and advice for improving our organizational capacities. We are very excited to work with Dentsu Aegis who is one of the leading multinational Company in the field of advertising and digital media.
