Dear HLFPPT Supporters,
With the advent of the New Year, we are glad to share that we have completed two years of successful implementation of the project through your generous donations. We would like to thank you for all your support in making this project a success. We gratefully accept your recent contributions! Thank you.
So far, we have successfully reached out to 103 poor pregnant mothers with safe delivery at hospitals along with all necessary medical care during pregnancy and after delivery. In this report, we would like to share one such case of 22-year-old Lalita, a slum dweller, who lives on the outskirts of Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh, India. Lalita lives with her in-laws in the abysmally poor state. Her husband Deshraj – a cobbler –is the sole bread earner in her family of five members. The living condition of Lalita and Deshraj is appalling.
Challenges for the couple plummeted last year when Lalita realised that she was expecting her second child. Her only hope was that this baby would survive… somehow! Lalita has had a miscarriage earlier, owing to lack of timely medical attention. She didn’t want to meet with the same fate this time.
“Although I wanted to seek medical care this time and undergo all tests and checkups, our financial constraint often acted as a hindrance,” says Lalita. However, a chance visit by Chandrikala, a Merrytarang Didi (Community health Worker) working under Merrygold Health Network (MGHN) changed the life of Lalita & Deshraj.
Lalita shares: “I once attended one of the community meetings organised by Chandrikala Didi describing pregnancy care. I shared my family economic condition with didi who then helped me in enrolling for free medical services and delivery at an MGHN facility.”
Thanks to the incredible support of donors, Lalita safely delivered a baby girl, Pihu, at MGHN Hospital earlier this month. “This project has saved me and my baby’s life. My family and I are incredibly thankful to the MGHN doctors and Merrytarang didi for helping us with MGHN services” says Lalita.
In a country that’s contributing to about a quarter of global maternal deaths and a third of world’s malnourished children, Lalita is living in every nook and corner of the country. Women like Lalita are in the need of similar kind of support from us in getting aided services for institutional delivery under our Safe Motherhood Global Giving Initiative. Since last quarter, we have been falling short of funds to reach the target of 500 Poor Pregnant women under the project. Thus, we seek your constant support in this New Year, re-affirming our commitment towards spreading smiles through the promotion of safe motherhood.
We look forward to your generous contributions.
