Fuel for Life: Household Energy

Cooking Stoves for Flood Victims in Pakistan' on Global Giving Project Report: : JAN 2012 – MARCH 2012

Submitted by Shumaila Khurshid on 12April 2012 - 8:30pm

STOVE DISTRIBUTION / CONSTRUCTION
Project  completed three months of  first cooking stove distribution for flood victims of MALTI, lower sindh ,Pakistan.
The study was successful and the stove had a very positive impact on the quality of life of rural women with the data showing that there would be large health gains as well. Women also saved time, both in the time needed to cook and the time needed to collect fuel wood. Normally women spend almost the whole day for collecting fuel wood but now they can save their time, energy and wood by using these simple and easy to use stoves. In total with a combination of 233 families benefitted from this distribution.

The number of households using fuel efficient stoves in the flood effected villages of lower sindh in year 2012 will be increased by 3000, during which 233 stoves total were placed in Malti area. We have actually set a goal above this, which is to try to get 4000 stoves into different villages by the end of year 2013.

The household members were very happy about the stove and they told us how much difference it would make for them and all their family. After we completed the distribution for the 233 stoves we called the previous 130 stove beneficiaries using the rural committee members and asked them about their experiences of using this fuel efficient stove.

Mr. Allah Ditta says, “My wife is much more happy and healthier now as it not just saves her time but also has reduced harmful effects on her health that she was going through due to the previous stoves they had at home, I would like to thank AHD for making our lives healthier and better”.

Traditional stoves have lots of problems in which bulk usage of wood, environmentally also good due to it didn’t have any kind of smoke exhaustion, so the village women suffered from number of diseases like Asthma, Eye sore, Lungs and respiratory infection, and most important the house wife of village families on risk due to fire hazard because of traditional stoves model haven’t covered.

Dear all donor of cooking stove for flood vicitms in Pakistan,

New Year 2012 Greetings from AHD Pakistan!

We are happy to share our quarterly report and the progress about cooking stoves construction in flood affected areas, our AHD project team facilitated and helped poor rural families in construction of 500 new cooking stoves in their household level. Please find below the case study

Case Study of Mrs Maya Jitu

Mrs. Maya Jitu age 50 years resident of village Nodhani. The village has 60 families and they are using traditional stoves for cooking. The Health of village women has been affected from major problems as smoke has affected the eyes of the women and even some women have developed the Asthma problem. The traditional stoves have got no chimney and proper space for exhaustion of smoke. Since AHD introduced their (FES)  fuel efficient smoke less stoves, health of village women is improving because this stove have chimney and consumes less woods two stoves at the same time can be operated, time consumption also reduces and the major point of this is that the fire hazard in their house hold has declined.

Mrs. Maya’s thanks:

I am personally very thankfully to AHD staff for introducing this stove to us and making us aware of benefits and being a village woman I will try to continue this process and train other village women as well.

Dear Donors,

This is very upset news that the families AHD provided training on Fuel Effecient cooking stoves were affected by floods in 2011 after one year in the same postion. Now we need to re-build cooking stoves and support this project to be completed in the next coming 2-3 months. The floods damaged more than 10.2 million people in rural Sindh and still flood water are standing at houses, villages and crops; people affected by floods in 2011 are residing on road side and open air, they all need quick support. Through this project, we will be able to re-install cooking stoves. Targted families show their interest to re-build and AHD staff needs to visit these villages to see the progress.

We also needs your quick support and donation, on Oct 19th is the grant matching day and hope your donation on that day will help us to raise more funds for our project. GOD bless you and keep use for the humanitatrian cause in future.

Thanks from the communitis of Badin & Thatta Sindh Pakistan
