Dear Supporter,
We are very grateful for your support of our project to rescue sick and injured street animals in India.
In May and June this year alone, we have rescued 737 animals. That number includes 523 dogs and puppies, 33 cats and an amazing 163 cows! There are many thousands of cows free-roaming on India’s streets. You may have seen them on TV shows such as The Real Marigold Hotel. Many of the cows have owners that let them out during the day to forage – but unfortunately, they end up eating rubbish including plastic waste that has a terrible effect on their health and can prove fatal.
Many more are neglected or turned loose when they are no longer producing milk, and so lose their usefulness. These cows are at risk from plastic consumption, road traffic accidents and abuse from humans.
The sorriest lot of all are the ‘orphaned’ calves – forced out so that their mother’s milk can be kept for human consumption. These little calves, some only days old, are most at risk on the busy streets. It is particularly common with male calves, who have no use in production. They end up becoming big roaming bulls that can cause problems in the human communities in which they wander, looking for food. While the crisis for India’s cows grows, and there is no official solution forthcoming, it comes to TOLFA to help those that are in need. Rescuing a cow is rarely an easy task, especially if they are recumbent (unable to stand) but our team are specialists and will never leave an animal to suffer alone.
Our large cattle shade at TOLFA recently flooded due to the monsoon, but it’s good news for our cows – they have moved to a pasture field just up the road. We are still able to provide daily treatments and care, with the youngest calves getting extra special support and bottle feeding from our nurturing team.
We often feature the dogs and cats we help, but the cows are just as important, and they make up a large number of the animals we help. By supporting us you are helping them as well – Thank You!
Best Wishes,
Clara Nowak
