Provide Quality Care for Rescued Horses in Texas

Easy R Equine Rescue received a call from the owner of a horse in need. Little did they know, when going to pick her up, how much need she was in. Maysie's frail body and weary spirit told a story of neglect, and she was only weeks from perishing. But the odds were on her side, thanks to the saving grace of the rescue.

Fortunately, Maysie landed with Easy R in August 2024. Her healing journey began that day! She started with slow feeds to bring her body weight and condition back to normal. Everyone was determined—including Maysie—to be healthy once again and to live a life of safety, comfort, and stability. One can only imagine what was going through her mind as she fought to stay alive each day, hoping for someone to help.

There were rough days ahead, with her liver enzymes rising to dangerous levels. But veterinarians were right there to help her. With her will to live, Easy R's will to help her, and veterinarians administering excellent medical care, she continued to improve slowly but surely.

Over the following months, her transformation was nothing short of miraculous. While she was very thin, a slow feeding regimen was the only way to bring a horse back to health, requiring patience and knowing this was the right way. It’s difficult to watch the slow weight gain. It’s normal to want to feed her everything she wants immediately, but it's very dangerous for a horse that isn’t used to eating all they want. So, it's a slow process that requires knowledgeable hands at the helm to make this happen. With all the experience that Easy R has in this area, Maysie was on a path to guaranteed success.

By January, Maysie had reached a normal weight, and so many changes had taken place. Her coat was a completely different color—a normal color—and Maysie turned into the most beautiful horse one could lay eyes on. Her two different colored eyes now have a light that shines in them, filled with thankfulness for those who were determined to save her. Her disposition is so sweet, and she loves being with other horses in her new foster home.

Back in late July 2023, Easy R Equine Rescue received a call from a gentleman who lived outside of town.  A stray horse had wandered onto his property and he had contained the horse within the fenced 20 acres on his property.  Several days later the local sheriff's department was able to locate the owner of the horse.  Extenuating circumstances ended up in the owner wanting to relinquish custody of the horse to Easy R.  And the gentleman and his wife whose property the horse was on were willing and interested in fostering the horse for us.  They had the time and the space to care for a foster horse.  They named him Rusty, and quickly became excited about spending less time watching T.V. in the evenings and more time grooming and getting to know their new "foster son". 

Rusty was a bit underweight and had a scarred back leg which also had some lameness and strange hoof growth patterns. A veterinary exam with x-rays revealed extensive arthritis in the joint above the hoof line, possibly from a previous bone fracture that healed poorly and created changes to the bones.  But with as-needed anti-inflammatories and light to no riding under saddle, it was determined that Rusty would be a great pasture pet.  Which he is fine with! He loves nothing more than to graze away the day on the 20 acres at his foster home.

Just a few weeks after Rusty's arrival at the foster home, the gentleman received the news no one wants to hear.  His body was consumed with cancer.  We offered to move Rusty, knowing that cancer treatment would take all their needed time.  They wanted Rusty to stay.  He had become "therapy" for the husband and gave him something to do to keep his mind on positive things.  His cancer was very viscious and took his life in early September.  Once again, we offered to move Rusty to decrease the workload of his wife who would be doing all the household chores and duties alone now.  But she wanted Rusty to stay.  He had also become her "therapy" after losing her husband.  Feeding and spending time with Rusty gave her some peace and comfort during her great loss.  She is glad to foster him as long as is needed until he finds his forever home.

As we look back over the sequence of events of Rusty's arrival to this particular property of this particular couple, we have no doubt that it was divinely ordained.  That Rusty's presence would be needed to assist a human passing from this earth and to assist the loved one through her grief.  Horses are the most wonderful of healers.
