This project will provide basic veterinary, dental, and farrier services to 10 horses at Easy R Equine Rescue for one year. Semi-annual vaccinations, regular dental work (floating teeth), and regular farrier work on their hooves are all very essential to the overall health and well-being of the horses. Second to feed costs, these services are the largest expenses in providing quality care to all the Easy R herd.
Many unwanted horses in our area end up at the local sale barn being bought by a kill buyer who takes them to Mexico for slaughter. Others end up being neglected to the point of starvation or severe malnutrition at best. The ones we are able to rescue come to us in marginal to poor condition. Many haven't had regular vet, dental, or farrier services in a long time, if ever. Vaccinations prevent disease; dental care assists in proper eating and digestion; farrier services keeps them sound.
We exist to save the lives of at least some of these horses, providing them with quality veterinary, dental, and farrier services as soon as they become a member of the Easy R herd. All of these services are necessary for each horse to regain its health. This project will assist us in routinely and completely vetting a new horse, starting them on a nutrition plan that is successful only with good dental care, assessing for lameness, and implementing a regular and/or therapeutic farrier plan.
The project will have long-lasting impact on 12 rescue horses per year by providing them the medical care for improved health, engagement in therapeutic activities, and rehabilitation necessary to ready them for adoptive homes. We try to ensure that each horse is as healthy and sound as possible to increase the chance of adoption. Community members are more willing to donate to our organization when they see the quality care we give to each horse.
