Reproductive Health For Rural Communities

Summary

This project will reach marginalized rural communities with reproductive health information and services. Through organizing free monthly health clinics in villages, offering family planning, HIV testing and counseling, child immunization, and cancer screening services in collaboration with the locum Ministry of Health Care Workers. Community Health Promoters lead these efforts by educating the public and mobilizing them to access the services.

Challenge

In our target areas, the Family Planning unmet need is 34%, cancer screening is 64%, and HIV prevalence is 3.3% (Nakuru Health Service Sector Report 2023). Rural communities face severe challenges due to low literacy, harmful myths and misconceptions, and distant or inadequate public health facilities. This results in unplanned pregnancies, large family sizes, STI risks, unsafe abortions, and increased immunization defaulters. We address these gaps with health information and services.

Solution

Kalyet Afya Foundation will reach vulnerable rural communities with reproductive health information and services through the following approaches: Reproductive Health training to Community Health Promoters who educate community members about their reproductive health rights, demystifying the harmful myths and misconceptions, organizing monthly health clinics in the villages where community members receive various services; cancer screening, HIV testing provision of FP services at zero cost

Long-Term Impact

By bringing reproductive health and information to underserved communities, they will be able to make informed decisions about their health leading to increased uptake of family planning and other reproductive health services, manageable family sizes, reduced rates of unplanned and teen pregnancies, reduced rates of unsafe abortions and healthy babies. Collaborating with the Ministry of Health ensures health systems strengthening for sustained access to reproductive health services.
