I mixed feelings about this project as I write this report. It has taken a long time to get news from Musotte on the progress of the school rebuild following its destruction as the hands of Hurricane Matthew.
I have finally received information and I’m delighted to say that a significant part of the school has been rebuilt. Children have teachers have returned to the building and are once again learning in the 6 rebuilt classrooms. We chose to raise money for this project as it would be a tragedy for a generation of young Haitians to miss out on their chance of education because a natural disaster took away their place to learn. So to see the school being used again brings a amazing feeling to us here at HHA, and we are so thankful to you and to GlobalGiving for making this happen.
However there is another side to this story. As you can see from the photos, the rebuild is very basic and in truth there is more of the school still to be done. The classrooms are still bare and the school still lacks most of its basic furniture and equipment. We will continue to fundraise for the school so that it can be finished and equipped but this is a typical example of how that whole region remains even 18 months after the Hurricane. Houses and community buildings remain in tatters and most of what has been repaired is just as vulnerable to further hurricanes, flooding and earthquakes. Although this school building is far from pretty at the moment, it has been built strongly so should remain an important community building for many years to come.
Across a large part of the country, the amount of money available to help the rebuild is nowhere near the amount needed to repair the devastation that was caused. Thousands will live in extremely poor conditions for many years to come. Communities will do without the services and infrastructure that define them. Children will miss out on the opportunity to improve their lives. There’s no justice to this but we do as much as we can to make a difference. We truely believe that that the work to repair that one school in Mussotte will change hundreds of young lives in the area so we thank you once again. Please don’t forget about Haiti and the suffering many there still endure every day. Thank you.
