Through the generosity of 88 people, we were able to raise $2,319 that will go to Help 190 Women In Northern Uganda Learn To Read run by Women's Global Empowerment Fund. Eagle eyed readers will notice that when we picked this project last month it was named "Help 95 Women In Northern Uganda Learn To Read". Thanks to your generosity, we've provided enough funds to educate 50 women and prompted the project to increase their capacity to help even more women!
When we told Karen Sugar, the project leader, about the generous donations from the Club, she said that these funds will enable 50 women to "participate in our literacy program two times per week for 8 months. Giving women the opportunity to learn to read and write allows them to create a brighter, more secure future for themselves and their families."
As the New Year starts, we're pleased to announce that Give Hope & Healing To Abused & Trafficked Women is the project of the month for January 2011.
Give Hope & Healing To Abused & Trafficked Women is run by Hagar USA and serves trafficked and abused women in Cambodia and Vietnam by providing holistic recovery services, such as residential care, trauma counseling, legal support, literacy education, and employment.
Increasing numbers of women in Vietnam and Cambodia are trafficked for sex or labor or suffer domestic abuse. These women typically come from poor families, with little or no education. They have few opportunities for safe and dignified employment. Sadly, the children of these women also become increasingly vulnerable and susceptible to abuse, themselves.
This project provides rehabilitation services, job readiness, and vocational training. Then, survivors will be supported as they reintegrate to society, hold their first jobs, and move from transitional housing to independent living.
Your donation will provide support to women like Trang.
Trang, a Vietnamese trafficking survivor, received assistance from this project. As a result, she says, "I feel more self-confident and strong now. And, I possess a value that is respected by others. I have the right to decide for myself what I can do, and what I want to do... to live a life without fear."
The funds raised this month will help women like Trang start the New Year with new opportunities for freedom, safety, and employment.

Thank you so much for helping Support Sustainability For Guatemalan Farmers this past month!
Through the generosity of 50 people, we were able to raise $1,257 that will go to Support Sustainability For Guatemalan Farmers run by Agros International. The Project of the Month funds will support the rural poor in the village of Villa Linda with loans and capital to expand their businesses, grow more crops, and work towards owning their own land.
We're pleased to announce that Help 95 Women In Northern Uganda Learn To Read is the project of the month for December 2010.
Help 95 Women In Northern Uganda Learn To Read is run by Women's Global Empowerment Fund and provides microloans and literacy training to women in Uganda.
The people of northern Uganda are recovering from a 20+ year brutal insurgency, where for over a decade 1.5+ million people lived in IDP camps, facing violence, poverty and hopelessness. This project provides microcredit loans and an eight month literacy training program to 95 women, many of whom are formerly abducted persons, child soldiers, sex slaves. All of the women in the program have suffered unimaginable violence and many missed the opportunity to receive a basic education.
Your donation will provide literacy training and microloans to women like Grace.
Grace was abducted and forced to live in the bush for over 8 years where she was repeatedly raped. She has three children. When she escaped two years ago, she returned only to be abandoned by her family and ostracized by her tribe. This is not uncommon for women who have been sexually assaulted; they not only carry the physical and emotional scars of their experience, but are then shunned and turned away from their family. Grace was invited to join an existing loan group, which provided her the necessary support and safety. Today, she is on her 4th loan cycle, her business as a fruit and produce vendor provides her the opportunity to send her children to school, experience increased economic activity, and food security.

Thank you so much for supporting Healthcare for Pregnant Women in Nicaragua this past month!
Through the generosity of 43 people, we were able to raise $1069 that will go to support Healthcare For Pregnant Women In Nicaragua run by Susan Dix Lyons at Clinica Verde. This project is building a clinic for 1,500 high-risk pregnant women. They have started construction of the clinic and are now looking to raise the funds to purchase medical supplies and equipment. Susan has told us that our Project of the Month funds will allow her to purchase two fetal heart monitors for the clinic. On behalf of the hundreds of patients and babies that will benefit from having these, thank you!
We're pleased to announce that Support Sustainability For Guatemalan Farmers is the project of the month for November 2010.
Support Sustainability For Guatemalan Farmers is run by Agros International and supports the economic development of the village of Villa Linda, Guatemala.
Ten million Guatemalans live below the poverty line, earning less than $1 or $2 a day. Nine out of ten in Guatemalan farmers do not own enough land to feed their families. Trapped in a cycle of basic survival, they pay exorbitant rent for poor quality land or work for desperately low wages as migrant laborers. Agros restores hope for such families by helping the villages like Villa Linda purchase farmland, provide agricultural training, and much more. Families pay back the cost of the land, proudly earning right to its title.
Agros offers families the opportunity to earn land over time through the fruits of their own labor. This year they plan to start gardens, small animal husbandry projects, a community bank for small businesses, and training in natural medicine. The Agros model works to ensure economic, environmental, organizational, and social sustainability. Sustainability is not only key for the villagers, but for the long-term and integrated approach to address these issues in Guatemala.
Your donation will go to support the people of Villa Linda like Rosa.
Rosa is an enthusiastic member of the Agros Guatemalan community of Villa Linda, and has been a member of the Community Bank since it first began three years ago. Rosa has participated in many workshops and trainings to support her business endeavors and has especially benefited from meeting with members from other community banks in the region. Looking at the success of her two businesses raising chickens and pigs, one would not imagine that Rosa's first project resulted in thirty-five chickens that died of sickness. Now, Rosa is able to vaccinate her animals every three months and is proud to share that she has $134 in savings as a result of her hard work and dedication.

Hi Project of the Month Club Members,
Thank you for another amazing month. Together we raised $1,040 from 40 people to support Provide Technology For Haitian Students during the month of September. With these funds, they will be able to purchase a computer for the computer lab, provide an internet connection for that computer, and train the teachers on how to effectively utilize technology in their lesson plans. When we told Jeff, the project leader, about the good news he said, "My school year was off to a good start, but now it is off to a great start! Our kids in Haiti and Palmyra will be thrilled!."
During the month of October, your donation will be supporting Healthcare For Pregnant Women In Nicaragua run by Susan Dix Lyons at Clinica Verde. This is an amazing project that is working to build an environmentally sustainable health clinic that will provide healthcare to 1,500 high-risk pregnant women and 4,000 children in Nicaragua annually.
Susan has raised enough funds to complete construction of the clinic, but she still needs funds to outfit the clinic with supplies and medical equipment.
This is where we come in. The Project of the Month Club donations will purchase vital medical equipment and supplies that the clinic needs to provide healthcare to women and children in the area. Specifically, our donations will fund the purchase of two fetal heart monitors ($500 each). Susan tells us that they need to purchase a total of six heart monitors, so any additional funds that we can this month will go towards the four remaining fetal heart monitors.
She's noted that once completed, the clinic will collect rainwater in a cistern to assist with daily water needs. It seems appropriate that despite record rainfall during the month of August, they are on track to complete construction in November.
To celebrate and recognize the impact that you are making, Susan has told us that anyone who gives $100 or more this month can have their name etched onto a brick that will appear in the walkway to entrance of the clinic. If you are interested in taking advantage of this, you can make a one-time donation to the Project of the Month club to bring your monthly total up to $100 for this month.

Dear Project of the Month Club Members, Thank you all for another amazing month! During the month of August, we raised $710 from 30 members to support a project called "Restore Eye Sights To 500 Bangladeshis." We were able to provide screening for fifty cataract patients and fund cataract surgery for ten people. The picture above is of one woman whose eyesight was restored during GlobalGiving-funded surgery this past month. Your donation has given her the miraculous gift of sight!
During the month of September, your donation will support a Back-to-School project called "Provide Technology For Haitian Students." This project was started by Jeff, a Pennsylvania middle school teacher, who wanted to find a new way to engage his students. Together, they found a school in Haiti to partner with and have set up a wiki where the students create lessons for each other. They have regular Skype video conferences between the two classrooms where they provide video instruction on topics ranging from English to electrical circuit design.
Since none of the Haitian students have computers at home - and the school only has limited resources - this project is also working to build a new computer lab for the school in Haiti. As one of their recent project reports shows, they have completed building the room, including installing new desks and chairs, but don't yet have it equipped with computers. That's where we come in.
With your generous monthly donation, this September we expect to be able to purchase a computer for the computer lab in Haiti, as well as provide an internet connection for that computer for the first semester of the school year, and training for the teachers on how to utilize technology effectively to improve the quality of education for their students. What an incredible accomplishment you are supporting!
