The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an international campaign that runs each year from November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to December 10, Human Rights Day. This campaign calls for global action to increase awareness, galvanize advocacy efforts, and share knowledge and innovations to end violence against women and girls worldwide.
Mirai Future of Kenya is actively participating in this global movement by addressing critical issues such as defilement, early marriages, and pregnancies in Kenya. These are pressing concerns that continue to obstruct the progress of gender equality and the right to a safe, violence-free life for children and young women.
Key Initiatives and Impact
1. Prevention and Education: Mirai has conducted extensive training and educational programs that focus on preventing sexual violence and promoting child protection. This includes workshops on legal implications, children's rights, and community-based prevention strategies for early pregnancy and child abuse. By equipping community leaders and volunteers with the necessary knowledge and tools, Mirai is fostering a proactive approach to tackling these issues.
2. Community Engagement: The organization works closely with local government officials, assistant chiefs, and community volunteers to create a supportive network that advocates for the rights and protection of children. Mirai's efforts have led to increased awareness and community action, reducing instances of early marriages and pregnancies.
3. Empowerment of Volunteers: Mirai has successfully trained Community Protection Volunteers (CPVs) who serve as the frontline defence against child abuse and gender-based violence. These volunteers engage directly with families and communities to provide education and support, thereby strengthening the community's capacity to protect its children.
4. Legal Advocacy and Partnerships: By collaborating with local legal entities and government agencies, Mirai is advocating for stronger enforcement of existing laws and the development of comprehensive policies to protect children and women from violence and exploitation.
Funding is crucial for sustaining and expanding these initiatives. Mirai Future of Kenya's work is vital in creating safe environments for children and empowering communities to stand against gender-based violence. Donations will help provide resources for training, educational materials, and community outreach programs, ensuring that the work continues to reach those who need it most.
