Following the August 2024 launch of the project's fundraising campaign, Mirai staffs devised a schedule for the December 2024 start of the pilot activity. This involved creating a to-do list and project outline in the months before to the holiday activity. We have thus far used our network of partners to spread the word throughout their networks and our social networking sites to promote the project. In order to provide a comprehensive understanding of the issues that we seek to address, we have also recorded interviews with a select group of Mirai partners who have worked on or collaborated on various projects. In addition to carrying out the fundraising, we also started a series of consultative sessions on how to best implement the initiative and engage children in a child-friendly and participatory way.
We paid a visit to the Assistant Chief, one of the local authorities in Mwala Sub-County who collaborated with us on the JICA partnership project, on September 16, 2024. This was done to seek advice on how to best engage children during the holiday, secure permission from the local government to carry out the initiative, and find a suitable location to rent for the activity. We were directed to the Assistant County Commissioner (ACC), who authorized us to conduct the campaign's interview with the assistant chief and to write the letter of approval that will be delivered to the Deputy County Commissioner (DCC), who oversees Machakos County's Mwala Sub-County. We are currently drafting the letter for submission in a week’s time.
We are now looking into possibilities for a rental space where we can carry out the activity. Masii Town has been selected as the location of the first activity. The building must offer an outside play area for the children as well as an indoor capacity of between thirty to forty. It must also be conveniently located from the town since we intend to involve children in the interior areas of the town, and it must be comfortable enough for children and the youth to stay without feeling stigmatized or profiled. We shall provide you enough updates as soon as we start our sightseeing.
