Dear Donors,
Time flies! Fall is just around corner. As a new school semester is starting, we would like to introduce to you a new school that we worked with in the past summer.
Xijiadou Elementary School, located in Guangling County, was founded in 1928. Over the years, the faculty and staff at Xijiadou had worked very hard to improve the students’ learning experience. They built multimedia classrooms, a music room, an art studio, a library, and a computer lab as well as bought sports equipment and internet covering the whole campus. The faculty also sought self-improvement as they incorporated peer evaluation and collaborative teaching into their routine. Now, with 455 students and 32 teachers, Xijiadou is rated as one of the top schools in Guangling county for the quality of education it provides.
One of Xijiadou’s curriculum ideologies is that the school should nurture an interest and appreciation for reading in students. However, while trying to create the ideal reading atmosphere for the students, the faculty met difficulties. Even though the school library holds more than 9,000 books, the books are not readily accessible to the students. The library, being a small room filled with high shelfs, does not have sufficient lighting and space for students to read. To read outside the library, the students would have to borrow books through the librarian. The librarian, being one of the teachers, is often busy and not there to answer students’ requests. The faculty felt that this situation greatly hindered the students from gaining a good reading experience. Therefore, they came up with the idea of building a bookshelf wall along the main corridor in the academic building.
This past summer, with a little more than 7,000 RMB from you, we put together a brand new bookshelf wall for Xijiadou. The bookshelf holds more than 1,000 books and is accessible to the students 24/7. The students were very excited and the faculty indeed observed more students reading each day. Before we left, Xijiadou also became a participant of our reading program, where the students would get books (classics, science, art, history, etc.) from us at no cost as long as the teachers agree to spend ten minutes each day reading the books to the students. We hope reading can enrich the lives of the students and help them see the world through an open mind. On behalf of all students and faculty at Xijiadou, we thank you for your generosity. Without you, none of these could have been possible.
Thank you!
Sincerely,
OCEF
