Our Progress Over the Last Three Months

Dear Donors,

We hope you have had a great summer. Several exciting events have occurred during the past three months.

Your support has been wonderful. The Microsoft YouthSpark Bonus Day held during the end of June was a huge success. We would like to thank you for helping us win first place in the campaign. In total we have received over $40,000 of donations and over $10,000 of matching and bonus funds. All of the money raised will be calculated into the next funding plan and afterward distributed to various OCEF projects.

On July 11^th, we launched the Summer Camp to Support Education project in Huining, Gansu Province. More than twenty of our volunteers from various parts of the world went to Chaimen Middle School and Touzhai Elementary School and spent almost three weeks with the local students. In order to enrich students’ summer lives, the volunteers designed a total of eight courses for interactive learning—Conversational English, Reading, World Culture, Arts, Music, Sports, Introduction to Computer, and Medicine and Health. The program received abundant positive feedback from students and parents.

In the meantime, another group of our volunteers worked on Girl’s Education (GE), a collaborative program between OCEF and China Rural Library. The GE program caters to the needs of girls who live in rural areas of China where poverty and gender inequality are deep-rooted. We provide comprehensive and long-term support, both social and financial, to girls aged 20-30 yrs. Our main goal is to give them reassurance of worth, opportunities, and guidance for a better future. The most recent GE project currently is taking place in Chaba, Sichuang Province, where senior volunteers are staying with the local girls for an extended period of time as well as offering courses on sexual health, living skills, and career development.

Spring Aid Distributed & New Challenge TODAY!

Dear Donors,

We have great news to share with you!

TODAY, June 25^th, we are given the special opportunity to participate in Microsoft YouthSpark Bonus Day! With $200,000 available, Microsoft is matching every donation 100%! We want to sincerely thank you. It is exclusively your strong support that made our project stand out and got invited. Let us take up this challenge together to win more money for the children!

(From June 25 at 12 PM (EDT) (noon) to June 26 at 11:59 (EDT), every donation from $10 up to $1,000 per donor is matched 100%. An additional $2,500 will be given to the project that raises the most funds and the project that has the most unique donors.)

In the past four weeks, we had finished distributing the first portion of our financial aid fund of the 2014 spring season. A total of ¥306,450 was given to 784 elementary and middle school students and ¥636,500 to 623 high school students. The students expressed their deepest gratitude to you.

The financial aid packages were usually delivered to students in ceremonies hosted by the schools that they were attending. Our inspectors then periodically visit aid-recipients’ schools and families to keep an account of their progress in school. The inspection results will become an essential factor in a student’s eligibility for future financial aid. We do our best to make sure that your support always goes to those who need it most.

Help Children Attend School

Dear Donors,

Happy May! With spring just around the corner, it is time for another wonderful update.

Thank you for your continuous support over the past three months. To increase the impact of your donations, please consider helping us on May 7th, another GlobalGiving Bonus Day. (During a Bonus Day, 30% of all donations between $10 and $1,000 will be matched. The project with the most donors will get an extra $1,000 grant. Matching begins at 9:00 am EST on May 7^th.)

As we told you in the last letter, we have been using some of your donations to build libraries in schools that seriously lack educational resources. Additionally, we have a lot of donations that are collectively reserved as part of the financial aid fund that will go to individual students who require financial support to attend school.

In the most impoverished rural regions of China, students from families with extremely low income drop out of school to alleviate the burden to their families. Deng is such a student. Deng lives in Peng'an County in Sichuan Province. Her mother suffers from hearing and speech impairments and her father just passed away due to illness. The family has no breadwinner and cannot find government assistance. Deng does not know where her next meal is coming from, not to mention her tuition for the next school year. As a result, despite the fact that Deng was admitted to a high school last year, she tells our volunteers that she is not going; instead, she wishes to join the workforce. Will this decision truly make her life easier? We have no way of knowing. However, we can help.

In areas like Peng'an County, to stay in school, students in elementary school and middle school need only $100/year; although attending high school requires more than $100/year, the amount to be raised is surely still within our capacity. Each year, we divide up our funds to give to thousands of students like Deng to make sure that financial pressure is not the only reason that keeps them out of school. This year, we are very happy to announce that $10,000 of all the donations we have received through the GlobalGiving window will join the fund pool that we have designated for individual children who desperately seek education.
