Dear Donors,
Happy Spring!
This time we would like to share with you the story of Ms. Feng. Ms. Feng is a teacher at Gaowan Elementary School in Haiyuan County, Ningxia Province. She has been teaching at Gaowan since March, 2011. Throughout these six years, her remarkable knowledge of the subject matter, engaging teaching style, outstanding classroom management skills, and strong rapport with students have earned her the respect and trust of everyone around her. However, unbeknown to her students, outside the classroom Ms. Feng’s own life is full of difficulties. In 2014, Ms. Feng’s father passed away, leaving her as the only breadwinner in the family. With barely over $100 a month, Ms. Feng has to support two younger siblings, who are in middle and high schools, and her grandfather, who is in his eighties and often needs extensive medical care. Even Ms. Feng herself admitted once that if it were not for her passion for education and love for her students, she would have stopped teaching at Gaowan.
Ms. Feng’s colleagues, after knowing her living conditions, reached out to OCEF. As an organization that supports education in rural China, we feel that we can and should help Ms. Feng. Starting from Spring 2017, Ms. Feng will participate in our Teacher Aid Program. We hope that by providing regular financial assistance to Ms. Feng, we can make her life easier and allow her to stay longer with her students at Gaowan.
In rural China, due to poverty and desolation, many schools like Gaowan are unable to offer fair wages and employee benefits and, as a result, have great difficulty hiring enough professionally trained teachers. These schools then have to rely on teachers like Ms. Feng, who are willing to work with 1/10 to 1/20 of the regular teacher salary. OCEF's Teacher Aid Program, established in 2006, aims to help these teachers. We provide both financial assistance and additional professional training to those who experience financial hardship but remain committed to teaching educationally deprived children in rural areas. In this way, we can help keep good teachers available for the students. As of now, OCEF has helped more than 700 teachers like Ms. Feng. We could not have done this without your help.
Thank you so much for your generosity and kindness.
Sincerely,
OCEF
