Haiyuan Huimin High School in Ningxia
Haiyuan Huimin High School in Ningxia

In the school year of 2020, from Fall 2020 to Spring 2021, we supported 58 high school students with the fund from GlobalGiving, who will get 2,400 Chinese Yuan in each year. They were from 2 high schools: Suichuan High School in Jiangxi province, and Haiyuan Huimin High School in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. Jiangxi and Ningxia are two regions with underdeveloped economy. Many students are from single-parent families. They lost one of their parents in accidents or because of diseases. Ting, a girl from Suichuan High School, is a cancer survivor, but lost her right leg. Her mother isn’t very healthy and couldn’t work, and her father has to work very hard to support her and her younger brother. With your generous donations, we feel humble that we could provide her some financial aid and make her family lives a little bit better. Life is hard, but with love, we could be strong enough.

Each semester, each student could choose a book in their feedback forms. Our volunteers will buy and distribute the books to the students when they get their financial aid. Ting is a girl who loves reading novels. In the past 2 semesters, she got The Great Gatsby by Scott Fitzgerald and Journey Under the Midnight Sun by Keigo Higashino. She will get The Hunchback of Notre-Dame by Victor Hugo this semester. Among all the books that our students chose, the most popular books are Ordinary World by Lu Yao, How the Steel Was Tempered by Nikolai Ostrovsky, and The Three-Body Problem by Liu Cixin. Many students also choose poetry books, history books etc. We are so glad that these students could get their favorite books twice in each year. All of these books come from your kind contribute to our GlobalGiving fund-raising project.

This fall, as the policy changes, we are very regretful that we couldn’t continue our projects in Haiyuan, Ningxia, but we will continue to support 22 students in Suichuan High School in Jiangxi. We will provide the feedback in our future project reports.

We also have a good news for our supported high school students, that we have decided to increase the financial-aid from 2,400 Chinese Yuan to 3,000 Yuan from this fall. With the high inflation in the past decade, we believe that increasing to 3,000 Yuan will give these students and families more help. Money won’t solve all the problems, but at least they could feel the love and caring from outside and overseas.

Again, life is hard, but with love, we could be strong enough.

Wish you and your family a very happy Thanksgiving!
Stay warm and safe!

Dear Donors,

Last month we finished setting up new books at Xiaoqin Elementary School and are now here to share our happiness with you.

Xiaoqin Elementary School is located about ten miles north of Pingliang city, Gansu. The school was built in 1937 and since then has been providing learning opportunities for children in the surrounding rural areas. Currently there are 11 teachers and 105 students at Xiaoqin.

In 2019, we had our first collaboration with Xiaoqin and donated 390 books to start their library project. During follow up visits, we were impressed by how much effort the faculty members invested in establishing good reading habits for the children. Earlier this year, we received a request from Xiaoqin for more books and were beyond excited. In May, we delivered 350 new books. For the past month, teachers have planned various reading activities and students have been very happy with the newly expanded book collection.

We could not have done this without your help. As always, thank you for your kindness and generosity.

Sincerely,

Overseas China Education Foundation

Dear Donors,

We are happy to announce that we have completed another project!

In addition to the Shitie School that we told you about last November, another school in Xuanhan County named Sansheng was also in need of new desks and chairs. Located in the town of Tuhuang, Sansheng School has long been in a state of desolation. The area is not only geographically difficult to access but also suffers from an economic collapse that could be traced back to 2003. Despite all the hardships, the faculty at Sansheng stayed. Currently there are 38 full time teachers, providing education for over 500 students.

Due to financial difficulty, Sansheng reached out to us. We worked together and installed 400 sets of new desks and chairs. Now the students are able to study in a much cleaner and more comfortable environment. The project costed approximately $5,400, which all came from your donations. We are very fortunate to have your continuous support. Thank you so much.

Please stay healthy and stay safe.

Sincerely,
Overseas China Education Foundation

Dear OCEF donors and volunteers:

The season of harvesting and thanksgiving is upon us again; we would like to wish you and your family a happy and healthy holiday season! Thank you for your continued support for and trust in the OCEF! We are deeply grateful for your help, support and participation in any shape or form.

GlobalGiving’s 2020 #GivingTuesday Campaign will be on December 1, from 00:00:00 Eastern Time to 23:59:59 Eastern Time. There will be a $1,000,000 Incentive Fund on #GivingTuesday. You may participate by clicking the "GIVE NOW" button in the end of this report.

The Incentive Fund will be distributed to participants proportionally based on final fundraising totals. This means that, at the end of #GivingTuesday, the projects that bring in the most dollars will win the largest slice of the Incentive Fund, and every project that activates donors will earn something. Online donations up to $2,500 per unique donor per organization will count towards earning a portion of the Incentive Fund.

Besides the invitation to #GivingTuesday, we want to report our progresses in 2020.

With immense gratitude, we report another year of resilience, of resourcefulness, of hard work, of love for learning, of hope—all because of your tireless work, trust and support. OCEF has been operating in high gear whenever possible, in whichever channel that is open.  5,519 financial aid packages of $781,000 total have been issued to K-12 students.  Library Program sent 13,624 books to the schools.  Almost $92,000 were used on Campus Improvements, which in some places means the students can finally have proper water supply. These figures offer a glimpse of OCEF’s work in 2020. COVID-19 put a hold on our Summer Teaching Program and delayed our Online School Program, but 68 volunteers still conducted 480 hours of online classes covering six subjects, benefiting 1,500 students.

Despite what seems to be insurmountable circumstances, we managed to direct our resources where needed. Financial Aids, Online Classes, Book Drive, Special Projects (Campus Improvements) and Correspondence have all been highly active and effective. We particularly would like to mention the 524 letters in response to student beneficiaries’ incoming messages. That personal, high-touch exchange is priceless in this confusing and sometimes faceless world. We take pride in this tradition and we thank each and every one of the 48 volunteers writing these letters with genuine care and love.

This very genuine care and love is what drives us and makes OCEF different. When life is hard, we work harder, because deep down we know there are so many students out there who got it worse, far worse. We also know, these students, these teachers, never give up, never will. Any tiny bit of help we can give along their heart-wrenching, nail-biting, winding and sometimes dark way out, is an outstretched hand pulling them forward. It may just tip the scale. We take comfort and renew our faith in the knowledge that we have lightened the way, warmed hearts, rekindled hope.

This holiday season is bound to be one that is remembered singularly. We wish you a safe and restful one. Above all, peace. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Sincerely,

Overseas China Education Foundation

Dear Donors,

Hope this letter finds you well.

We would like to introduce Shitie School to you this time. Located in the remote northeast region of Xuanhan County, Sichuan Province, Shitie village is about 80 km away from the nearest town. Therefore, for many children in the surrounding areas, Shitie School is the only available choice. With 59 teachers and 922 students, 192 in kindergarten and 730 from 1st to 12th grade, the school has been struggling financially for a long time. While the administration tried hard to reduce costs while delivering necessary resources to the students, there was only so much they can do.

Earlier this year, the school decided to reach out and work with us to renovate the classrooms and dorm rooms. The most urgent needs are new desks, chairs, and dorm beds. The current set of desks and chairs as well as dorm beds have gone through rounds of repair and come to the point that maintenance alone cannot keep them function reliably. To give the students a better learning and living environment, we installed 350 sets of desks and chairs and 150 new beds. The project, costing about $11,600, was funded entirely by you. The new furniture markedly improved the living conditions of students at Shitie and we could not have done it without your continuous kindness and support. Thank you so much.

Please stay healthy and stay safe.

Sincerely,

Overseas China Education Foundation
