Dear Donors,

Hope this email finds you well!

This time we would like to introduce you Gouxi School. Gouxi is located in Longquan Village, a small village about 40 miles away from Langzhong City in Sichuan Province. The school consists of an elementary school and a kindergarten, functioning as the only learning institution in the surrounding area for a total of 72 students and 32 pre-school children.

OCEF first visited Gouxi in March of 2017 to observe a library project started there by another foundation. Our initial impression of the school was that, despite of having only rudimentary facilities and limited classroom resources, the administrators and teaching faculty were very attentive to the children's needs and put a lot of effort into making the best of what they had. After the library project was complete, the school was very cooperative in providing periodical feedback about the management and usage of its new library. We paid Gouxi another two visits in November of 2017 and March of 2018 and found it to be exactly the type of school we look for to partner with, and so we began a new project with Gouxi.

The new project involves building a play area in the school's kindergarten. Substantial research shows that play links to healthy brain development. The pleasure of play facilitates and accelerates all aspects of learning, including emotional, social, motor and cognitive. In fact, play is so important to optimal child development that the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights recognizes it as a right for every child.

Gouxi had long intended to build a play area to enrich the children's lives, but no funding was available. Fortunately, this summer, with your generous contributions, we made it possible. The whole project costed a bit less than $600. The interior of a classroom was re-designed and re-decorated to serve as the play area. New toy sets, such as building blocks, play-doh, magnetic tiles, and balls, are scattered around the area.  Cushioning of the floor is still in process but will soon be finished as well.  The children are now very happy upon discovering a new playground and the new toys are becoming their favorites. Your help had made a true difference in their lives.

Thank you so much for your kindness and generosity!

Sincerely,

Overseas China Education Foundation

Dear Donors,

Last month, we held a weeklong education seminar for teachers in Fuyang, Anhui. The seminar is a part of the OCEF Pilot Library Project that focuses on training and helping educators develop a healthy reading environment for school age children. A total of twenty four teachers participated. The teachers come from different parts of China at where OCEF has long-term local funding programs. They have been teaching with very limited resources and are very eager to learn new knowledge and skills. During the seminar week, they visited several different well-established school and community libraries, and then spent the rest of the time practicing reciting passages, sharing stories, doing hands-on activities, analyzing book passages, watching performances, and browsing through educational forums. After the seminar ended, we received very positive feedback from all the participants.

We hope that through seminars like the one in Fuyang, we can help teachers in better evaluate the reading environment at their respective schools and promote their students' interest in reading. After we worked with multiple schools on building libraries, we realized that the mere existence of books was often not sufficient to encourage children to learn independent reading, make it a part of their lives, and truly find pleasure in doing so. We have to consider many factors, such as the age-appropriateness and diversity of the books, the organization and accessibility of the libraries (lighting, seating space, catalogue, open hours, etc), and the schools' cooperativeness in ensuring reading is integrated into everyday classroom practice. We soon found that the most efficient and effective way to keep all of these factors in check and continuously improve the reading culture in a school is to have motivated teachers who strongly believe in reading for enjoyment. Unfortunately, working at rural schools seated in poverty and desolation, often the teachers simply do not have an up to date knowledge of children's literature and pedagogy. Therefore, we started the Pilot Library Project, in which we focus on helping the children through helping the teachers. The teachers go through training seminars and take what they learn in the seminars to set up independent reading sessions, story time, book clubs, and guided reading in their classes. We hope that, by keeping such practice consistent, the children will grow up in a lively reading culture within the school environment and benefit from the experience in the long run.

Without your help, we could not have made any of these possible. Once again, thank you for your kindness and generosity!

Sincerely,

Overseas China Education Foundation

Wang on the road to a village

Dear OCEF donors and friends,

Rongshui Miao Autonomous County is a small county of Liuzhou city, Guangxi autonomous region. It has very beautiful mountains and rivers. Unfortunately, many villages hide inside those mountains and rivers with less connection with outside. Poverty is a serious problem.

OCEF has many projects in Rongshui, including student financial-aid, teacher aid, library projects, and special school improvement projects. Many students are supported by OCEF and its donors, and some of them have graduated from high school and enrolled in colleges. N. Wang is one of them. He comes from a single-parent family, and got financial aid in 2015. He studied very hard, and successfully entered Department of Landscape Architecture, Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University, in the summer of 2016. In that summer, he joined other villagers to build railway in Baise city, and earned more than 3,000 RMB as tuition. This is not the end of the story. He didn't disappear, because he applied to be a volunteer of OCEF in September 2016. When he was a high school student, he always asked questions about OCEF, and showed strong interest to be one of the volunteers. When he was in college, he helped our project coordinator collect teachers feedback and maintain library categories. In the winter break of 2017, he volunteered to visit many underprivileged families and students. These families are mosted located in big mountains, far away from everything. He drove his motorcycle on these local roads only he is familiar with, and he knows the local language which we are hard to understand. He is the key to the difficult jobs of family background investigation. With his great help, we recognized many students who urgently need financial support. From then on, he did a lot of volunteering jobs for us in every school break. He continues to help us in other projects when he is in college in Fuzhou.

He is not the first volunteer who was once supported by OCEF, and he is also not the last. That's the most beautiful thing we could imagine. We passed our love to these kids, and when they grow up, they amplify the love and pass to more kids. They were unfortunate to be born in poor families, but they were fortunate to be gently touched by someone like you, and they were thankful and decide to pay back their thankfulness by help others. As volunteers, we thank them, and we appreciate their choices. Their choices define the meanings of our volunteering jobs, define the contributions of our donors, and define the success of OCEF.

N. Wang is not alone. We had L. Li, C. Xiao, Z. Meng, Y. Wang and Y. Huang joined as volunteers. They were all students got financial aid from OCEF before. Winter is cold, but they make it warm. With their help, we successfully held a winter camp in Rongshui this January. Four volunteer teachers from Beijing brought music program to about 50 students who are being supported by OCEF. They all got great experience with music and other arts, which they couldn't get from local limited resources.

Spring is coming, let's warm up, and cheer up. Go kids go! We love you and you deserve a better tomorrow!

Dear GlobalGiving donors,

Holiday season is coming, and we wished you all a very merry Christmas.

From this Spring, we increased our 1to1 student financial aid.

  • For primary school students, the aid increased from 600 Yuan to 700 Yuan per year.
  • For middle school students, the aid increased from 900 Yuan to 1,000 Yuan per year.
  • For high school students, the aid increased from 2,000 Yuan to 2,400 Yuan per year.

This year, we supported 50 high school students using the donations from you and GlobalGiving. They are from Jiangxi, Ningxia and Guizhou province. Most of them are from a single parent family, and the financial aid will not only provide tuition support, but also encourage them to continue their high school study. We read a lot of letters from the students we supported before, and many of them mentioned that the encourage is priceless for them, and they can feel that there are some people still care about them. We believe that with your support, these students will have a better future, and pursue their dream easier.

We attached several letters form these kids. They are underpriviledged, but we are very glad to see that they are strong enough to fight with their fate. In this year, many of our previously supported students have graduated from colleges, and some of them have been our volunteers! They are providing volunteering services to the younger students in their hometowns. What a wonderful circle! We believe that later, when these 50 high school students grow up, some of them will join us to help other students. We believe that we have planted a seed of hope and love in these students' hearts.

Stay warm and healthy!

And we will see you next year!
