Krystal - Shoulder Issues

Hello Las Lomas Supporters!

Krystal is a 14 year old Shepherd mix. She recently had issues walking and was limping on her front left leg. She was able to get around but it was hard for her to stand up. We took her to the vet and they had to do x-rays. Her shoulder appears to be fractured; however, there is a chance that cancer could be the cause of this. There is no sign of cancer in her lungs, or anywhere else on her body. She has a great appetite and is a happy go lucky dog.

The vet did not want her first option to be amputation, due to her age and uncertainty if cancer is involved. He put her in a sling, hoping she will learn that she can walk on three legs without actually having to lose one. She is on two different medications. One is for pain, although she amazingly doesn't seem to be in pain. She's not real fond of the sling but we are giving her time to adjust and will follow up with the vet as needed.

Cayenne

Hello Las Lomas Supporters!

Cayenne was once a scared, timid, and very feral dog. We fed her, and a few others, for two full years before we were finally able to trap them and bring them to the rescue. They had never had any contact with humans and were terrified of everyone. Upon arriving to the shelter, we had to literally carry the traps inside the kennels and set them free inside the shelter.

Cayenne is slowly coming around. She still spends most of her time inside the dog house when humans are around but she does come to the front and sniff my legs while I am cleaning. If I am not looking at her directly, she will even come out of the dog house and stand beside me. One day, I caught her on top of the dog house and noticed she had a tumor.

She went to the vet, had all her blood work done and also x-rays to make sure the cancer wasn't in her lung. Fortunately, it wasn't. All of her blood work was good. So the next day she had surgery to remove the tumor. Pathology reports verified it was cancer. We are hopeful we caught it soon enough and the vet is confident he was able to remove all of it.

Cayenne had all of her shots updated as well. During this recovery time, we had a lot of thunderstorms and the weather was cold. Being that she is not good with other dogs, I couldn't bring her inside the house. We do have a roof on the shelter but when the wind is blowing strong the concrete sometimes still gets wet. We needed to keep her dry so she spent the past 11 days at the vet recovering from her surgery.

She is now back at the shelter and is as happy as she can be. Your donations helped to pay for this surgery and save her life. We took out a small loan to pay the remained of her bill.
