Learning the Art of Filmmaking

I am known as “Ceci”. I am 23 years old.

When did you first think of becoming a filmmaker?

When I was still a teenager, I knew something had sparked inside of me. I yearn to be able to earn the qualities of a good director, to be able to tell our stories in quality of both picture and sound. I am working towards that.

What training have you had with Hot Sun Foundation?

I participated in the Hot Sun Foundation Advanced Filmmaking project and extended my skills in production and camera work.

Why is Hot Sun Foundation important for upcoming filmmakers?

Hot Sun Foundation exposes young filmmakers to new and upcoming equipment and challenges, therefore building stamina in the world of film which is crucial.

It provides access to quality training for all.

Why should people support Hot Sun Foundation?

If anyone want to support art they should do so in a place where art is provided for.

For the film enthusiast, Hot Sun Foundation is one way to support art and be sure it is enabling someone else to achieve their dreams of becoming a filmmaker.

Final comment

"Rude Boy" to Filmmaker

Where are you from? Kibera, Nairobi, Kenya

How old are you? 24

What is your background in filmmaking? I attained a certificate in filmmaking at Kibera Film School

What did you do before the training at Hot Sun Foundation? What was your life like? I was a rude boy in the slum of Kibera and could not see someone pass with valuables without trying to rob them.

When did you first think of becoming a filmmaker? Once I stole a digital camera and was previewing stuff from it. Then I realised that the videos are interesting so I decided not to sell the camera to the brokers but instead keep the camera to record lives in Kibera. Unfortunately someone stole the camera from where I used to keep it.

How has your life changed since your training at Hot Sun Foundation? I can say it changed a lot because now ‘Mavado’ my rude boy name changed to ‘Ondivow’ and the society gained their trust in me again. Now they even want me to train their kids in the photography skills I learnt in the film school

What experiences have you had with Hot Sun Foundation? Hot Sun has built lots of filmmakers from the Kibera slum and also has opened doors to filmmakers around Kenya.

Why is Hot Sun Foundation important for upcoming filmmakers? Because it open doors for them to learn better filmmaking skills compared to the other foundations who are just after your money but don’t build you as a filmmaker.

Why should people support Hot Sun Foundation? Because it is supporting people who are unable to afford filmmaking training, both basic and advanced.

Changed My Life

Michael, age 25

When did you first think of becoming a filmmaker?

A production crew come to my village to shoot some TV commercials. I liked the way they did their work. I started watching films and I love story telling.

How has your life changed since your training at Hot Sun Foundation?

It has made me change my way of life. I have a job and I am supporting myself. I have had the opportunity to travel to different places. I enjoy my work.

What are your plans for the future?

I would like to advance my editing skills and become the best in my field of work.

What training have you had with Hot Sun Foundation?

I have had all hands-on training from script writing, camera and editing. Basically the training covered all aspects of filmmaking.

Why is Hot Sun Foundation important for upcoming filmmakers?

It is important because it helps the youth to sharpen their skills in filmmaking and provides affordable training.

What has Hot Sun Foundation contributed to the development of young filmmakers?

Hands-on training has helped a lot of young people to develop filmmaking skills faster.

What is the biggest challenge that young filmmakers face in Kenya?

Lack of money and support from the government is the biggest challenge we have.

What can filmmakers themselves do about the challenges they face?

Work hard and trust each other in the industry.

Why should people support Hot Sun Foundation?

Because Hot Sun Foundation is the home of filmmaking in Kenya. It supports young filmmakers in sharpening their skills.
