In May 2018, Makaia, in collaboration with the EPM Public Library in Medellín Colombia, has provided digital literacy training for older adults with hearing disability. Fifteen people attended the training sessions, where they had the opportunity to learn how to use and make sense of the internet and softwares such as word and paint.

As on previous occasions, the trainer was Mrs. Alejandra Serna, who is an experienced trainer and also has a hearing disability .

Due to the donations received through the Global Giving platform to our project "Inclusion for people with disabilities in Colombia", we have been able to provide trainning in ICT skills to people with disabilities and / or organizations that work with such communities

During the last five years, we have benefited 1789 people.

We really appreciate that you are part of this great initiative and thus help us to fulfill our vision: "That every person and organization has the information to transform themselves and their environment".

In the month of January 2018, in collaboration with the EPM Public Library of Medellin, we developed a workshop for 20 people with a hearing disability. The objective of this session was its digital literacy, oriented to employment. This meant the construction of a leaf life, job search in different portals and application to vacancies.

Alejandra Serna, graphic designer and auditory handicapped was our formator in these literacy processes.

Thanks to the donations received through GlobalGiving to our project "Inclusion for people with disabilities in Colombia", we have been able to continue training and support people and social organizations that work with this population group.

During these five years, the project has influenced 1774 people.

Thank you for being part of this project and helping us to provide development opportunities to more people each time.

We were in the León de Greiff Library in the sector La Ladera where we trained population with sensory hearing impairment. The purpose of this digital literacy session was the social inclusion and socio-cultural integration of people with disabilities in the activities carried out in the Library. It also sought to develop skills to enable these people to take advantage of the technology freely offered in the Library. Training Session
With the support of GlobalGiving and yours, MAKAIA is taking steps towards best practices on ICT in Colombia!

Last month we organized two training sessions with Aula Abierta Foundation, an organization that works with cognitive disable children. The objective of this sessions was to give a background on the risks that children and adults face in the virtual environment when resources are not use in a responsible way. The staff and the parents learned about online safety measures and effective use of mobile devices at work, practices that will better protect and provide a safe environment for the development of online activities.

The sessions also emphasis in the way to improve the efficiency of the work that the staff do in their daily basis. The staff learned how to use technology in different classroom activities with the children of the foundation, taking advantage of the online tools available on the web.

Likewise, in August we carried out activities in public libraries to develop digital skills with people with hearing disabilities.

Thank you for your generous support and making a reality our dream of building capacities in social organizations in Colombia. This capabilities and online best practices will improve the lives of people with disabilities.

Hard work has leads to great rewards and that is what the beneficiaries of this project are experiencing.

We had the opportunity to receive representatives from Global Giving to our project. We visited two of the organizations benefited by the project: Mónica Uribe por Amor Foundation and Aula Abierta - Disability without Barriers. In both organizations we took a tour around their facilities, we met the kids that take advantage of the services of the foundations and we talked with the people who received trainings from MAKAIA in the development of this project.

We were exited to hear from the organizations the great benefits that this project has given to them. They are now more efficient and productive, they can be more structured in their process and therefore have more capacities to provide their services. You can read more about the visit in our website.

To continue our mission, we are going to design with the organizations a seminar about online security for parents, a concerning topic in the Colombian and worldwide context. Also we hope to take our actions to public libraries and work in digital skills with people with earing disability.

Thanks for you generous support and for making true our dream of building capacities in social organizations in Colombia. Capacities that will improve the lives of people with disabilities.
