People with physical disabilities learn to use ICT
People with physical disabilities learn to use ICT

Since early this year, Makaia launched a campaign at the GlobalGiving virtual platform that aims to mobilize resources in order to support the adoption and use of information technologies and communication, ICT, to people with hearing, visual, cognitive and physical disabilities in Colombia.

We are pleased to announce that this week we had the graduation of 14 people who experience physical disabilities who received their certificate after twenty hours of training in the appropriation and use of ICT.

The participants of the course, which this time included wounded soldiers, could learn tools like email management, e-government tools and programs to make effective presentations. The training was also intended to strengthen the business ideas of the participants through ICT and to encourage entrepreneurship within the group.

We strongly believe that there are no limitations to learn and especially when we have amazing tools such as ICT. Generally, the attention that the population with disabilities in Colombia receives in other projects focuses on psychological support, and physical therapy. This is one of the main reasons that make our project very innovative and important to these people.

Last month, due to the great results we have had with the development of this project, and because of its high demand since its obvious relevance, we have decided to extend the project goal and begin the fundraising campaign to bring the ICT access to many more people with disabilities in Colombia.

Project Implementation Report   (Versión en español abajo)

The Inclusion for People With Disabilities Project in Colombia, through the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), has begun its implementation thanks to all your donations!

To begin with, various organizations working with people with disabilities convened in Medellin, Colombia in order to make clear the project purpose, which is, strengthening processes that contribute to the integral development of people with different disabilities through ICTs as a common denominator.

At the moment 56 people are taking part in the training programs with the support of 4 specialized trainers, 2 of them are hearing impaired and they facilitate the training process for people with the same disability.

Some of the  organizations Makaia is collaborating with:

 - Heroe Camina: We work with combat wounded soldiers to strengthen some educational aspects that improve their skills for online searching, presentation making and academic paper writing. These skills are useful for the higher education programs they received. The trainings for this group of beneficiaries are being held at the EPM Library.

 - Fundesor: Hearing impaired people without prior knowledge about the use ICTs are trained. In the trainings they gain knowledge in: online chatting (to communicate with friends and family), “Relevo” (communication program for hearing impaired people), Ovoo, virtual platforms to study online, among others of their personal interest.

 - Amigos con Calor Humano Foundation: people who have physical disabilities are trained in entrepreneurial activities using ICT tools, business plans have been developed and activities related to governmental online services have been executed.

 - Fernando Gomez Martinez Library: The library develops a great job with people from the community who have disabilities providing services that allow their inclusion.  We work with a group of people with cognitive disabilities and another group with physical disabilities. In the first one, most of them with children under the age of 16, the work is focused on strengthening their educational processes; complementary to the programs of the educational institutions they attend. In the second group the work is focused on ICT tools for daily use such as writing letters, online information search and e-mail use for communicating with friends and family.

 - Comfenalco Library in Medellin: Hearing impaired people are being trained. They already learnt about ICT basic concepts and they are currently receiving trainings in topics such as design, photography and presentation making.

For July we have planned trainings with the following organizations: Pro Débiles Auditivos, Handicap International and Mahavir Kmina.
