It has been a busy time of year for Sarah’s House!

Near the end of every school year, the staff and girls hold a Recognition Ceremony. The ceremony serves to celebrate each girl’s achievements in the care program over that year. Every girl receives an award unique to her and the way she’s grown. It is a sweet time of acknowledging how far we all have come!

Finishing school work, practicing music in the girls-only worship band, and more outings as Covid restrictions continued to ease kept the residents of Sarah’s House occupied through May. In June, the girls enjoyed two special events: an Ascension Day celebration out of the shelter and a Lantern Walk for Freedom.

The girls and staff of Sarah’s House walked with lanterns to advocate for freedom and healing in Indonesia alongside Compassion First friends and supporters in the United States, who were also walking with lanterns in June. It was a beautiful time.

Everyone is looking ahead to graduation ceremonies, more outings, and a restful break from school. We cannot wait to share what everyone in Sarah’s House will be up to with you all! Thank you for your ongoing support of this home; your gift contributes to daily healing and life.

Restrictions are beginning to ease as the numbers for new Covid cases decrease in North Sulawesi. Girls are now able to leave Sarah’s House for activities such as school, sports, music lessons, special tutoring, and fun activities, which is a welcome relief. The best part of the lifting of restrictions has been the ability to go home and visit family. During the majority of the pandemic, restrictions required connection with family to be through video or audio chat. Those first hugs from Mom and Dad were welcomed with open arms.

The girls have been so strong and productive during the pandemic amidst all of the restrictions they have endured. They are experiencing the fruits of their labor as they journey out and about the city putting into practice much of what they have learned. CF staff is very pleased with the progress they have made.

The staff has been remarkable. Adjusting to ongoing changes in schedule and covid protocol, they have creatively and joyfully made life at Sarah’s House fun and sometimes even exciting for the girls in our care.

Building resilience is a key focus of CF’s Aftercare program. The staff and girls of SH are experts in understanding the power of knowing and understanding an individual’s strengths. They all work hard to understand their own strengths and to understand the strengths of the people around them so each can grow to be the person they were created to be.

Daily life is not easy or fun when you are dealing with the healing of trauma. However, when trauma behavior shows itself, we do not ask “What’s wrong with you?” We ask, “How can I help?”

With this attitude in mind, we are beginning a restructure of our Aftercare Program. The Care Team continually seeks to improve and develop our program to best serve the girls we are privileged to work with. We will be spending more time together in the community, learning to recognize the obstacles that block our way and practicing how to overcome or get around those obstacles safely.

As the young women and girls of SH learn to navigate their community safely, we are so grateful to you who support the ongoing work of Compassion First. It is because of you and this support of SH that they have a safe and loving home to return to each day. You are helping to guide them into a strong, safe and bright future.
