A new home in Uganda

Currently, over a million Southern Sudanese refugees are living in the neighbouring state of Uganda. They flee from latest flare-ups of violence and from drought, which have led to a severe and ongoing famine since last year. But Uganda itself is not a rich state. Many people in Uganda are poor and need support themselves. Caring for one million refugees is a task that is not easily fulfilled. Aktion Deutschland Hilft and our member organizations are in Uganda to support the refugees and inhabitants.

One of the projects of our coalition is located in Omugo settlement at the border between Uganda and Southern Sudan. Here, the exemplary cooperation of NGOs and the local government has led to a perfect integration system: Every arriving family gets 30 square meters of ground to build a house and plant vegetables and crops. The village inhabitants welcome their new neighbours. For them, it is a natural course to help and support each other. Aktion Deutschland Hilft is in place to support the village with food and drinking water and with other non-food items, such as building equipment. In addition, Aktion Deutschland Hilft builds schools and health centers for both old and new neighbours.

Our member organization Handicap International is in Omugo to equip the new arrivals with basic things of need: food and water, clothes or cooking material. Furthermore, they offer psychological support for traumatised refugees. As an organization which focusses on helping people with special needs, they make sure that all services are accessible for people with mental or physical disability.

We are very grateful for your support of the project „Help for refugees“, as it makes this and other aid measure possible. With your donation you directly help refugees in Omugo and in other places of the world. Thank you very much.
