Getting the project on its feet!

The IBREA team arrived in San Salvador last May 23rd. The project's hosting partner is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in El Salvador, particularly their Department of Migration and Development. Through Brain Education we want to contribute to reducing the violence in the area and stabilizing the young population -- one of the main department's (and the whole country's) issues of concern.

After meetings and discussions with its Vice Minister and other staff members as well as the Ministry of Justice and various field visits and assessments in the school and the area, we have started the project with a research about the teachers' and the students' emotional and social condition.

In this first pilot phase, we have identified 24 adults (21 teachers and 3 health workers in the community) and 40 children in the age of 14 to 16. The adults will then be trained to train others in the future (other teachers, parents and local leaders). The research was applied to all of them and at the same time, to the same number of adults and children who will not be participating in the training. We'll measure the conditions of both groups at the end of the training to prove the positive changes brought about by Brain Education.

In the words of the school director "the mental and emotional health of our teachers and students is crucial to achieve their dream of overcoming trauma and creating a more just and human society. Brain Education offers so much hope to my people".
