The Fruits of Lifeskills

By Leonard Lenina | Project Leader

The girls playing during a past Lifeskills seminar
The girls playing during a past Lifeskills seminar

Schools opened in early September and a total of 75 children reported to their various schools in early childhood development (ECD), primary school and high school.  We added 4 new children to our program this quarter.

Sylvia, one of our ECD teachers who herself was a former sponsored child is doing very well preparing young children in her ECD class for Standard One.  Sylvia has been a very good example for our older children in that she has taken up her teaching responsibility very well and her lifestyle exemplifies qualities that we aspire to instill on our children.

After schools close on the 25 of October, 2018, Nenkashe Education Centre will hold a 4 day Lifeskills Seminar for 34 older children. We do this regularly because our formal education system prioritizes teaching of academic knowledge. However, it has become increasingly clear that such prioritization of academic knowledge without acquisition of psychosocial skills is an inadequate way of preparing young people for the complex challenges that exist in our world today.

Life Skills Seminars are very important for youth because it enables them to develop positive values, attitudes, skills and healthy behaviour in order to help them deal effectively with everyday life challenges they face today.

Kindly support our seminar next month by making a donation to Nenkashe Education Centre through GlobalGiving.  Two appropriate dates for you to give in October are the World Teacher’s Day and the International Day of the Girl Child, coming up on October 5th and October 11th, respectively.

Lastly, we are pleased to announce to our local and Diaspora donors that GlobalGiving now accepts payments made through M-Pesa.  You can now donate to Nenkashe Education Centre via M-Pesa Pay Bill: 891300, Account: GG18842.

Thank you for your continuing support.
