The first quarter of 2017 was a joyous beginning of the year for Nenkashe Education Centre. We carried out a lot of activities because you continued to support our project.
Entering High School
The first thing we did was to ensure that Lanoi and Naipante are properly transitioned into their new top national secondary schools. Lanoi is at Tumutumu Girls near the foot of Mt. Kenya and she is doing well at this top national secondary school.
Naipande is also doing exceptionally well at Kirima Girls, another top secondary school located near Lake Naivasha. But Naipante’s journey has not been easy. 3 years ago, she was brought to AIC Girls School by her brother after being rescued from Female Genital Mutilation. For the 3 years she was at AIC, she did not have any contact at all with her family. She was referred by her school’s head teacher to Nenkashe Education Centre and we were able to reconcile her back to her family.
Community Mobilization
Another important activity we undertook this quarter is to mobilize our community to ensure that they support our new pre-school. We wanted the community to participate in supporting the school by sending their pre-school aged children to the facility and paying a small amount of $5 a month per child to help offset a small portion of the school running expenses. There are 15 children in the school and their attendance record is impressive given that some of the children walk as far as 2 kilometers to reach the school.
Life Skills Training
Young lives are frequently ruined by practices such as early marriages and female genital mutilation and life skills training is one of the best ways to prepare young people mitigate such challenges. 17 of our older girls participated in a 2-week life skills training course conducted by Kajiado County Nutritionist who is a keen supporter and past beneficiary of Nenkashe Education Centre. The training covered vital topics to help youth learn how to set personal goals, make commitment to values, meet the challenges of adolescence and build self-esteem.
