The Making of a Champion

Teresiah just turned 16 years old in May this year. When she was 3 years old, her father died. Her mother also fell ill and became so weak that she was not able to provide for her 6 children. Her older sister was given away in marriage at a tender age and when she left for her new far away home, Teresiah took her place in caring for her mother and younger siblings. The bride price that was paid for her sister helped to maintain her older brothers in school but Teresiah had to stay home and take over the responsibility that her sister left. She started missing days and weeks from school. She lived in abject poverty.

One day, a family elder learned that there are plans for Teresiah to undergo circumcision when she was around 9 years old. He knew that if he wouldn’t do anything, Teresiah would go through the circumcision rite and would soon be given away in marriage just like her older sister. This is what he has always seen happen in poor families and he believed that there is a better way. He hoped that if the young girl goes to school, she may be able to care for her family better. So he reported the matter to the local area chief.

Before long, Teresiah was introduced to Nenkashe Education Centre through the Children’s Office and she was returned back to school. Arrangements were made with the family to help take care of her ailing mother. Because of the hardship that Teresiah had gone through at home, she was small for her age. She wasn’t eating properly. At school, she was withdrawn and her school performance was far below average.

Her teachers, worked patiently and diligently with Teresiah to help her catch up on her studies. They also helped her become more sociable to her school mates and helped her discover her special skills. After several years of working with Teresiah, her qualities began to emerge.

Today Teresiah is the Kajiado County Junior Women’s Marathon Champion. She has won many certificates of recognition for her school and won cash awards for excellent sports achievement in athletics. To the delight of her teachers and all of us at Nenkashe Education Centre, Teresiah’s academic performance is now above average.

This year in November, Teresiah is due to sit for her national examinations to enter high school. We expect that she will perform well and be recruited to a good high school. Please pray for her and continue to support her so that she can continue overcoming obstacles and succeed in developing the body, mind and heart of a champion. Thank you for helping build this champion!
