Help 50 Maasai girls get education, not husbands

We are finally ready to start building the first phase of our life skills and vocational training school. The Management Board of Nenkashe Education Centre sincerely thanks all of our sponsors and well wishers for enabling us to break ground and prepare to build our life skills centre. The centre will serve as a life skills and vocational training centre for youth in Kajiado County and also as a safe house for sponsored girls who are at risk of female circumcision and early marriage if they went home during school holidays.

We held a ground-breaking and consecration ceremony at the 5 acre Nenkashe Education Centre property and celebrated the occasion with the local community; our sponsored children and their teachers, parents and guardians; clergy and political leaders.

Most of the children that we support are in their adolescent years. They are going through a turbulent period filled with new feelings, physical and emotional changes, excitement, many questions and very difficult decisions to make. Last year, 2 girls dropped out of school due to teenage pregnancy. Vocational training will provide a safety net for early school drop outs to have another chance at preparing for a better future.

A life skills program will enable us to help young people develop skills to better cope with problems related to teenage pregnancy and early marriage. We want to build our sponsored children’s skills in three important areas;

• Decision making (e.g. Critical and creative thinking and problem solving)
• Community living (e.g. Resisting peer pressure, building healthy relationships)
• Personal awareness and management (e.g. self-esteem and managing emotions)
• Vocational skills training

Life skills programs go beyond provision of information. They seek to develop young people’s abilities and motivations to make the best use of all types of information which is at their disposal. At its best, life skills programs help young people to grow up and improve the quality of their young adult lives.

Thank you for your generous support for Nenkashe Education Centre. We had an exceptionally blessed year and we are happy to share with you the joy that you have helped bring into one of our sponsored girl’s life.

Nantayio is 9 years old. Her story has a tragic beginning when her father, who was a night watchman at a primary school in Kajiado town, was murdered by thugs one night when he was on night duty. A year later, her mother died of sickness and now Nantayio is an orphan living at Kajiado Children’s Home but studying at the nearby Kajiado Township Primary School; the school where her father was murdered. She has an older brother called Hosea (15 years old) who is also staying a Kajiado Children’s Home. Nantayio emerged the best student in an interview done last year to vet for class 1 candidates and today she is still performing well in class 2.

Nenkashe Education Centre pays for the upkeep of Nantayio and Hosea at Kajiado Children’s Home. When I visited her recently, she came running to greet me and she joyfully introduced me to her friends and showed me where she does her homework, where she eats and where she sleeps. She is very happy and secure under the protection of Kajiado Children’s Home.
