Towards the end of 2016 the two Anglophone regions of Cameroon became very tense. Following government violence against lawyers and teachers who were protesting peacefully for equal treatment under the law, English speaking Cameroon erupted in strikes and continued protest. In response, the Cameroonian government has cut internet to the English speaking regions-- severing essentially the only means of communication with the outside world. Teachers and lawyers continue to strike while peace talks are occuring, slowly.
Since teachers and school administrator are striking school children have not had the opporunity to return to classes for the entirity of 2017. This is truly unfortunate and upsetting. The children are most disadvantaged in this situation.
Better Family Foundation (BFF) is continuing to engage our pupils by calling meetings with students and families. During these meetings we spoke with parents about how to help their children learn at home. We also stressed it is essential their families occupy the students responsibly so that they are continuing to progress in both academics and character.
While the strikes are continuing BFF continues to operate. We remain excited about this project and optimistic that school can resume soon so that these students may reach their full potential.
We also thank you for your continued support-- without you the situation would be even more dire.
We've attached articles to the struggles of English speaking Cameroon (also known as Southern Cameroons or Ambazonia).
