Keep 500 Sick Kids Alive in Crisis-Hit Communities

Daily preventive therapy is one of the most important pillars of sickle cell care. Children rely on routine prophylaxis — folic acid to support healthy blood production, daily penicillin to prevent deadly pneumococcal infections, and hydroxyurea to reduce painful crises and severe complications. When these medications are taken consistently, sickle cell children experience fewer hospitalizations, fewer emergencies, and a dramatically improved quality of life.

But for displaced families living in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps, this continuity is often impossible. Conflict, sudden relocation, and unstable living conditions break the supply lines that keep children healthy. Many families arrive at camps with no medication, no access to pharmacies, and no way to maintain daily therapy. As a result, children who were once stable begin experiencing frequent crises, severe infections, and lifethreatening complications that could have been prevented.

Our project is designed to restore this essential continuity of care. With your support, we are establishing reliable medication pathways for displaced families, ensuring that folic acid, penicillin prophylaxis, and hydroxyurea reach every child who needs them. Through our mobile clinics, we will distribute monthly medication packs, monitor adherence, and provide caregivers with clear guidance on how and when each drug should be taken. We are also partnering with hospitals, laboratories, and pharmacies to rebuild the supply chain that displacement has disrupted.

In the coming days, once GlobalGiving disburses the next round of funds, we will begin a radio advocacy campaign to educate caregivers on the importance of daily prophylaxis. This outreach will help families understand why missing even a few days of medication can lead to severe complications — and how they can maintain treatment even in unstable environments.

Infections remain the leading cause of hospitalization and death among children living with sickle cell disease. Conditions such as malaria, bacterial pneumonia, and gastroenteritis can escalate rapidly, often triggering Acute Chest Syndrome — one of the most lifethreatening complications these children face. For families living in displacement camps and informal settlements, the risks are even higher. Crowded shelters, poor ventilation, contaminated water sources, and unsanitary conditions create an environment where infections spread quickly and children have little protection.

Our project is designed to confront these dangers directly. With your support, we are providing essential medicines, including antibiotics, antimalarials, and hydroxyurea, to strengthen children’s immunity and reduce the severity of infections. Through our mobile clinics, we will screen children for early signs of respiratory illness, treat infections before they become lifethreatening, and educate caregivers on how to recognize symptoms of Acute Chest Syndrome. We are also partnering with local hospitals and laboratories to ensure that sickle cell children receive timely diagnostic tests and safe treatment.
