Keep 500 Sick Kids Alive in Crisis-Hit Communities

Behind every sickle cell child is a caregiver carrying an extraordinary emotional burden. In Northern Nigeria, where poverty, displacement, and limited healthcare access are daily realities, caregivers often face overwhelming stress as they struggle to keep their children alive. Many mothers and fathers live with constant fear of painful crises, repeated hospital visits, and the possibility of lifethreatening complications. Over time, this pressure leads to exhaustion, anxiety, and emotional burnout.

Caregivers in displacement camps face even greater challenges. They must navigate crowded shelters, unsafe water, food shortages, and the absence of reliable medical support — all while caring for a child with a complex chronic illness. Many feel isolated, unsupported, and unsure of how to manage the emotional toll of watching their child suffer. Yet mentalhealth support for these families is almost nonexistent.

Our project is committed to changing this reality. With your support, we are integrating caregiver mentalhealth assistance into our medical outreach. Through our mobile clinics, we will provide counselling, stressmanagement guidance, and supportive conversations that help caregivers cope with fear, fatigue, and uncertainty. We are training community volunteers to offer emotional first aid, listening support, and crisisresponse guidance for families who feel overwhelmed.

In the coming days, once GlobalGiving disburses the next round of funds, we will begin a radio advocacy campaign that includes mentalhealth education for caregivers. These broadcasts will teach families how to recognize emotional burnout, how to seek help, and how to build supportive networks within their communities. Radio remains one of the most effective ways to reach rural and displaced families who have no access to formal mentalhealth services.

In Northern Nigeria, where poverty, displacement, and food insecurity are widespread, sickle cell children face daily nutritional challenges that directly worsen their health. Many families struggle to provide balanced meals, and children often lack the vitamins, minerals, and protein needed to maintain stable hemoglobin levels and fight infections.

Poor nutrition increases the frequency of painful crises, slows growth, weakens immunity, and leaves children vulnerable to severe complications such as anemia and Acute Chest Syndrome. In displacement camps, the situation is even more difficult. Families rely on irregular food distributions, diets are often limited to starchy staples, and access to fruits, vegetables, and protein is scarce. For sickle cell children, this nutritional gap can quickly become lifethreatening.

Our project is designed to confront these challenges headon. With your support, we are providing nutrientrich supplements, folic acid, and fortified foods to help children maintain healthier blood levels. Through our mobile clinics, we will teach caregivers how nutrition affects sickle cell health, what foods help prevent crises, and how to build simple, affordable meals even in lowresource settings. We are also partnering with local vendors and community groups to ensure families have access to safe, reliable food sources.
