Equip and Empower a Woman in India for Success

Women who live rurally in India have almost twice the level of illiteracy as men. Thankfully there is some change in children today, but for adults, they missed their chance.

Rashi grew up in poverty and had only a little schooling. She learned household chores, caring for the chickens and helped with her siblings. Education was an unaffordable luxury. She was married young and soon had a family. Her husband is a day laborer and began to drink to escape the difficulties of life. This means they rarely have enough food in the house and hard decisions trouble them, like whether the children stay in school or work in the field alongside the mother so that can earn a little money and help pay for the food they eat.

When you Give a sewing machine to a mom in India you provide the training and the equipment needed for a woman like Rashi to start her business. She does not get rich, but you empower her to earn her own income and use it to take care of her family in times of difficulty. It also means that she is at home when the children need to study and can give them the support they need to succeed.

Muppidi, graduated from high school just as the pandemic hit. Her father is a daily wage worker, so the family falls beneath India’s poverty line. She took the lockdown period as a form of gap year, during which she was introduced to a tailoring program funded by your donation.

In broken English, Muppidi, now aged 20 said, “In this gap I got an opportunity miraculously to learn tailoring because we are under poverty line so we can’t pay to learn tailoring course by payment. Now I can stitch all the models for ladies and school dresses very neatly, and it will be fit as I already tested by practicing in this training period.” 

Not only has Muppidi learned a new skill that will provide a steady income for her family, but she has acquired business and personal interaction skills, which all have contributed enormously to her confidence. “Thank you, one and all,” she said.
