In the midst of the holiday hustle, I wanted to take the time to share the updates of our 2019 Holiday Wish Drive to deliver joy to 80,000 children, seniors, and individuals in need across the Bay Area. In an effort to share the journey of wishes, Family Giving Tree has added scanning to our process. We will be able to track the individual wishes from agency request to Drive Leader distribution, back to the warehouse and into the arms of the person who requested the gift. Our goal is to be able to share more stories like Haydee’s:

A single mother working multiple jobs to support her two children, Haydee was suddenly struck with a debilitating injury. With medical bills piling up and the inability to work, Haydee’s world came to a sudden stop as her expenses kept coming and she had no way to provide for her boys and parents. In her words, Family Giving Tree “made Christmas for us. There was something to open that day.”

Everything can change in an instant, and the high cost of Bay Area living is a barrier to holiday celebration for many. You can make a difference and deliver joy to those like Heydee and her family. While thousands of gifts have already been distributed, many remain unfulfilled. Bring joy to someone in need today by supporting Family Giving Tree's Holiday Wish Drive!

Think back to your favorite holiday celebration. What did it include? Friends? Family? Food? Gifts? For many, the holidays look just like this. But for others: too many, the holidays are a reminder that theirs is dimmed: unable to afford gifts for loved ones or know that they won’t receive one. Left out of the reverie.

This year make it a part of your celebration to provide gifts for those who would otherwise go without. Join Family Giving Tree to provide 80,000 gifts across the twelve counties of the Bay Area. Working with over 400 social service agencies, with FGT your gifts are able to brighten the holidays for so many children, individuals, and seniors in need.

Celebrate the season. Deliver joy.

The summer months signal the first request for wishes from our 300+ partner agencies throughout the Bay Area. This is a crucial time for staff. For many, the holidays are a time to ask for things they want. However, as early as mid-summer, we at FGT see that wants and everyday essentials are one and the same for so many in the Bay Area. Our first recipient’s request exemplifies how the requests we receive are symbols of their everyday experiences:

30 years ago, when our founder asked a 12-year-old boy what he wanted for the holidays. He asked in Spanish, “two pillows, please.” Unsure if she heard him correctly she asked again only to be met with the same response. What was later discovered was that this child lived in a multi-generational home where he and his siblings slept on the floor because housing was too expensive. He was asking for the pillows so his siblings could sleep comfortably each night. Not only did Family Giving Tree fulfill that request but was able to provide additional bedding for him and his siblings to have sweet dreams.

Think the holidays are over? Think again. The memories you helped create this past holiday season last throughout the year! So many of our recipients are touched by the fact that someone in the community cares about them. One such recipient’s story is relayed through the director of one of our partner agencies based in San Jose:

One of his clients; a family had just lost their grandmother near the holiday season. This was particularly difficult for them as she provided care to the children as the mother, who was in the process of rebuilding her life, went to work each day. The director felt especially sad for the eldest boy since he had a strong bond with his grandmother. As a result, the director decided to purchase an expensive race car set as a special treat in addition to the gift provided by Family Giving Tree. When the boy opened his two gifts over the break, much to the director’s surprise, it was the less expensive Nerf set specifically chosen by one of our donors that brought the greatest joy and hours of fun.

It’s not the price of the gift that matters; It’s the thought that counts for our recipients. Your donations at every level can bring holiday joy to those in need and brighten their world.

Joy Delivered

The hustle and bustle of the holiday season has ended. Thanks to community support, every child on our list and waitlist received their gift. But did you know Family Giving Tree helps more than just children? Homeless adults, seniors in-need, and teens are all included in our Holiday Wish Drive. Unfortunately, their wishes are often are the last to be fulfilled, if fulfilled at all.

Imagine it’s the holidays. You’re sixteen and watching your younger siblings joyfully unwrapping their gifts. As the oldest child, you don’t expect to receive anything, only to be overjoyed when you open that special sweater you wanted. Fast forward: you’re 88 years-old residing at a senior center. The holidays don’t mean much to you. You don’t have any family and you haven’t even received a gift in over 15 years. Now imagine being handed a special gift - carefully selected for you. That beautiful robe will not only keep your body warm but also remind you that someone cares.

As we wrap up our Holiday Wish Drive with our partner agencies and our waitlist organizations, please remember that so many of the memories you helped create this season impacted those in our community who feel overlooked the rest of the year. Your efforts not only provided gifts but also unexpected joy and light in the world of our recipients. Thank you.
