Free Medical Access for Teenage Mothers, Bulgaria

“She is now healthy and safe. Thank you, doctor.” said Trayanka, one of the many teenage moms visiting the medical center in Fakulteta. Her storyis not an exception. She is only 18 now but already has a 3 months old baby. Since she was a little girl, Trayanka was abandoned by her parents and the only family member that took care of her was her aunt. Later on she got married and pregnant with the age of 17 but then Trayanka was left again this time by her husband. Her story would be even more tragical if the doctors didn’t find on time that her baby was sick and needed a special medical care. After receiving some firstaid the baby was sent to one of the biggest hospitals in Sofia where she received a proper treatment. After few weeks both the baby and Trayanka came back home. The little girl is now under the care of the pediatric in the medical center in Fakulteta happy and healthy.

This story shows the importance of having a medical center in the neighborhood where the mothers and their babies receive advices from our pediatric and gynecologist. In such situations not the days but every minute counts.

The medical center is the only source of medical counselling for many uninsured, disadvantaged mothers who lack access to the Bulgarian healthcare system. And we are forever grateful of your support!

In December last year Trust for Social Achivement in partnership with the Health and Social Development Foundation opened the first medical center in the history of Fakulteta neighborhood to provide prenatal care. At the time two doctors started examining pregnant women, young mothers and babies. In March we successfully added one more doctor licensed by the Regional Health Inspectorate and presently, two pediatricians and one gynecologist are working on monthly shifts. The center is fully operational after successfully passing the control visit of the National Health Insurance Fund.

Besides providing the patients with free medical checkups, one of the doctors also works on preventing unplanned pregnancy by inserting contraceptive coils.

We estimated that the health center will be able to provide care to about 250 mothers and infants in the coming year, and now are happy to inform you that just for the first three months of its existence, 96 young mothers, pregnant women and babies were examined already there.

The medical center isoperating at full speed and therefore still needs YOUR support to cover supplies and maintenance of the premises.
