Twix
Twix

Twix and Malin, a Tale of Two Dogs:

Twix is a puppy that wasn’t supposed to enjoy life; he was born unwanted, like so many others, so the basic means for survival were taken away from him. His poor body was getting weaker and weaker as the days went by and his short life was about to end, without him ever knowing a thing about living. Twix hadn’t eaten for days when he was found dumped on a field.

Twix and 6 kittens were rescued and live together. They were all brought to life with a lot of care and good food that made their tiny bodies stronger and healthy again, ready to take on life. They all have found their voices and will to play and live, enjoying their childhood without feeling hungry all the time. Other 12 puppies rescued from the street from similar situation need good food to stay strong against the many deadly diseases still present in Romania.

Malin lived all her life on the street. Malin was always a quiet, calm dog who never bothered anyone; she used to live near a market place and everyday she had to look for scraps in order to survive. Some days she was lucky and found something to eat, others she was just kicked around and went back to hiding, hungry and scared.

One day she thought she found a good chunk of meat and she was happy thinking it was one of the good days; Malin ate all of it, but soon after she began feeling very sick. People were passing by while she was struggling in pain and confusion; she was poisoned and about to die slowly and horribly. She was found at the last minute and taken to the vet and luckily Malin survived. She has lived in the shelter for the past 4 years and although Malin never knew the safety of a real home, she doesn’t have to fight for food anymore.

Like Twix and Malin, the other 150 dogs were rescued from dangerous situations generated by indifference and cruelty. We struggle to keep all of them fed and healthy, because when we rescued them we made them a promise never to feel hunger and fear for their lives again. A full tummy is all the spoil a shelter dog can expect, sadly. We would like to keep them as spoiled as possible and make up for their tragic lives.

Romania Animal Rescue thanks you, our supporters, for helping us to help these animals and so many more like them with food.  Your help saves lives.   Thank you!

Anda Popescu is a veterinary technician for Romania Animal Rescue.   She also runs Happy Paws shelter in Moreni, Romania.  Happy Paws takes in many unwanted animals and provides them with food, water and love.  We support Happy Paws with your donations of food for these animals.   They also socialize dogs and send them for adoption.  Here is the story of one of their recent arrivals.  Meet Ellie:  By Anda Popescu

Ellie is about 3 months old; she doesn’t remember much of her short life, just that one day she opened her eyes to this chaotic world, where big scary things moved around her and her tummy hurt all the time. She doesn’t remember her mother, just her warm belly, but once she was gone, there was nothing warm about the world Ellie was left in.

Ellie was scared all the time, scared and so hungry... she could pick out yummy smells in the air, but when she tried to get close to them, scary things happened; she learned that food is there, but not for unwanted puppies such as her.

Ellie doesn’t know what love is; love is for those who are born wanted, but she was an accident. People didn’t mean for her to be born, it was her mother’s fault, so both Ellie and her mother were punished to be forever hungry and unsafe. She doesn’t remember if she has any siblings, but she is now alone and she wondered the cold, wet streets alone for a long time...longer than Ellie can remember.

Ellie knows people can hurt her; small humans used to throw her around and kick her, so she would scream and amuse them. She tried to get away, but she was weak and her legs didn’t help much. She then cried so hard, hoping they would see she is just a small person, just like them, but they didn’t see it. Her tiny heart raced like crazy and she thought it would burst out of her chest with fear...they finally got bored and left her in a muddy puddle; she wasn’t amusing anymore.

Ellie can’t talk, but if she could, her words would probably break our hearts; so she keeps to herself, because dogs can endure much more than people can without complaining. She sleeps a lot, finally feeling safe in this new place she ended up, called a “dog shelter”. Scary people move around her, so she hides in her dog house, but they bring food and fresh water and talk gently to her. Ellie doesn’t know what love is...but she will learn.

The streets of Romania are full of dogs, it is no news and it caused by people’s indifference, lack of education and poverty, but also by the authorities’ indolence and corruption.  These animals are our victims and they suffer in silence, often without ever being noticed. In order to survive, they are forced to eat garbage or things we wouldn’t even consider eatable or suited for dogs, such as corn and nuts (village dogs) or just empty plastic bags smelling of food. It must be very frustrating for them to smell so much food around, but never to have it offered and when they are so desperate as to steal it, they most likely pay with their lives. Because there are so many street dogs in Romania, the fight for survival is hard and it means the weak and the puppies almost never get to eat, unless they are very determined to live. I think their struggle and their will to live at all costs is caused by their perpetual hope in the good of the humanity; they are saving themselves for the day when they will be saved by someone. Their hearts are pure, but their bodies are often so broken and weak, it takes a long time to restore their health.
As a charity for dogs, along with ongoing spay and neuter campaigns to stop the birth of suffering puppies and kittens, we shelter 140 dogs and we also sustain other 50 dogs kept in the old public shelter (managed now by an older woman), meaning we have to feed about 200 dogs daily, apart from those in the woods around our town and for the weaker strays in town who are helped to survive the harsh winter. We might not be able to provide luxury conditions for these dogs, but for them, the sound of our car means they get to eat that day, they get to stay alive a day more, hoping that day might get them a loving home, after all. Our biggest fear is that we won’t be able to feed them one day and that our car will be empty and we would break our promise to them, that they will never have to go to sleep on an empty and painful stomach.
We rely on your kindness to keep that promise and to keep them healthy and fit until that very special family sees them. Thank you for your generosity!

Dear Friends and Supporters,

As you may know, Romania Animal Rescue supports Happy Paws charity in Moreni as best we can with donations for food for their shelter animals.  These animals have had a hard life.....abandoned, hit by cars, unwanted.   It is our honor to be able to help this charity in particular with their food needs.   And it is very appreciated by these sweet souls who only want love and the basics of life: food, water, protection from the elements, and to live pain and parasite free.

I would like to share with you some photos of the animals that your donations allow us to feed.

Thank you for your donations of help and love.....

We wish you and your loved ones a wonderful holiday season!

Dear Romania Animal Rescue Friends,
I started my NGO called "Câinele meu" (My dog) in 2007 in Moreni, Romania, in the hope of saving as many animals as possible by both adopting them to loving homes and preventing their birth into a world of suffering. Moreni is a small, poor town where people have little patience and compassion for unwanted animals. Over the years, the City Hall tried to exterminate stray dogs by killing them inside the public shelter or directly on the streets, with poison.
For over 10 years we struggled to stop their illegal massacres. Moreover, our work to save them is a very hard one, as people are not at all willing to help physically or with donations of any sort. Between 2007 and 2012 we helped spay/ neuter for free owned and stray dogs; in 2012 we opened our very own shelter . The number of sheltered dogs changed as the conditions for them on the street worsened (the killing law from autumn 2013 made us extend our shelter, as stray dogs were getting killed day and night in Moreni). Our shelter now has 140 dogs, and we also have cats in foster care.
We are able to re home about 100 dogs per year to verified homes mostly abroad; we always make sure the homes are fit for our dogs, testing them with cats, children, all types of dogs, as requested by the potential adopter. Currently, all our dogs are spayed/ neutered (thanks to Romania Animal Rescue who also helps us with monthly free spay/neuter events for the community), vaccinated, microchiped and registered, they are not crowded and we also managed to build a playground for them. However, food is always an issue, because we depend entirely on private donors; most Romanian people would never bother to donate leftovers if nothing else, so we can’t depend on our community to give anything back. The City Hall made it clear for us they will never help us with food. Our policy is very strict and it only aims to benefit the dogs in our care; we promote healthy, happy and adoptable dogs and work tirelessly to find perfect homes for them. Any help regarding food is deeply appreciated, as we do try to compensate the lack of proper family attention with a good meal every day.
Thank you to Romania Animal Rescue for helping us to meet you all, and thank you for supporting my work and charity for the animals!
Sincerely, Anda Popescu president of Asociatia "Cainele meu" Moreni, Romania
