Christmas in Cambodia
Christmas in Cambodia

We would like to thank you, our generous donors and volunteers for helping us have a very successful year!

One year ago we opened our sustainability and partner project, the restaurant called Amici, thanks to a generous grant from the South East Asia Foundation.

Six months ago we opened a food bank thanks to our intern, Ayla, and the generosity of the Doenkers!  We also have several donors who supply our food bank every week.

Thanks to generous people, like you, we have raised nearly $35 000 on our GlobalGiving website since mid 2017.  We continue to hold other fundraisers in Cambodia such as our 90’s Night In February which was a hit with expats and our Bingo Night in June which raised over $1000.

In December,  we held our first Christmas fundraiser at our restaurant, Amici, complete with mulled wine, peppermint creams and festive tunes.  We raised $857 that evening!

Overseas, our supporters in Sudbury, Canada held a “Non-Dinner Dinner” Fundraiser which raised a few thousand dollars (stay tuned for the final tally).  They also made holiday deliveries for a local investment firm and raised another $4500 Cdn. It was a lot of work but they managed to deliver 450 gifts over the course of a few weeks despite a record breaking snowstorm!!!

Speaking of the holidays our students at ABCS AND RICE really enjoyed their school Christmas celebrations.  The children sang songs and played musical chairs, twister, sack races and tug of war. They also danced, enjoyed a special lunch and were sent home with a Christmas gift.

We feel so lucky to welcome back some of our long term supporters and volunteers.  Cha Iris, our friend from Canada, will be with us until April. After several visits,  Cha Harley has moved to Cambodia and helped organise our recent Christmas fundraiser and school party.  He will be helping out in our office as welll. Cha Dermot has returned and is teaching music to our students in preparation for our concert in January.  Finally, Cha David, another visitor to ABCS for several years, is helping Cha Dermot with the music lessons.

Thank you for your support!  Your generous donations provide education, food and medical care to over 250 children.  You are changing these childrens’ lives.

We  could not do this without your generosity and kindness.  Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!

Thanks to you and our other generous donors and volunteers,  we can continue to provide good news from ABCS AND RICE, the school in Cambodia which feeds the minds and bodies of more than 260 students.  Your generosity helps us to provide these children with two hot meals a day and allows us to send rice home to their families on a regular basis.  Helping to feed these families helps keep these children in school!

Thanks to your generosity,  these past several months have been very busy and successful for ABCS and Rice!.  Because we were able to add a 7th classroom, we were able to welcome 40 more students and hire a new elementary teacher!  We were happy to provide our teachers with a much needed supply room as well.

As you know, we provide our local community with clean drinking water and are proud to offer them access to our foodbank.  Every Sunday, 30 people come here to receive groceries, clothing and housewares.

In March 2019, YCIS, a high school in China returned for a third consecutive year.  This year they funded and built a 10 meter tall covered roof for our sports field and included netting and a thick layer of sand.  This roof is much appreciated as it protects our students from our extreme heat and rain. Thank you YCIS!

This past summer 2019 we were happy to have Dr. Rich Allen run a workshop to provide additional training for our teachers.  Thank you Dr. Rich Allen for helping us to better engage our students and improve their ability to recall what they have learned.  .

In July  an organization called PLASTIC FREE SEA screened a film called “A Plastic Ocean” in Khmer.  Twenty of our students from ABCS AND RICE were invited to this event to learn about the impact that single use plastic is having on our oceans.

A few months ago we welcomed the return of Beth and Tom, two of our valued supporters of ABCS AND RICE!.  They created a music wall for us on the outside of our food bank. Beth also taught the words and dance moves to “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey to our appreciative students.  Thank you Cha Beth and Cha Tom!

Last but not least we want to tell you about a great friendship which has developed between two of our students.  Kania, who is wheelchair bound due to a traffic accident when she was little, has found a great friend in Sonya. Sonya’s gait has been challenged due to a congenital condition.  Both of these girls live on the Fully Belly Farm, which was established by ABCS AND RICE. They come to school together, often with Sonya pushing Kania while using Kania’s wheelchair for support.  During school recess, Sonya uses her friend’s wheelchair to help her climb into the swing so that Kania can push her! It’s only thanks to you that we can happily  provide these girls with a school with education, food and friendship!

Our New Food Bank!
Our New Food Bank!

Thanks to generous donors like you we have more great news from ABCS and RICE,  the school which feeds and educates needy boys and girls in Cambodia.

Because of you,  we have grown significantly over the years.  While we started off with a few children ten years ago we will be welcoming 300 needy children this fall.

Your generosity also helps us to provide these children with two hot meals a day and allows us to send rice home to their families on a regular basis.  Helping to feed these families helps keep these children in school!

With thanks to generous donors from Belgium and local businesses in Cambodia, our amazing intern Ayla has worked tirelessly to help us add a food bank one month ago.  Each Sunday some of the poorest families in our community come to ABCs and RICE and “shop” for housewares, clothes, fruit, vegetables, bread, rice, noodles, canned goods, oil, sauces and cakes!

We continue to have amazing volunteers and interns work with us.  Mel, who is originally from Germany but who now lives in Australia, has been interning with us since April.  She organized a bingo fundraiser which recently raised $1,107!

Lindsey, an American who currently lives in Paris, has been volunteering with our Badgers class.  Niki, a local ESL teacher has also been volunteering since April. He has been running some teacher training sessions including how to source teaching materials.  A few weeks ago we also welcomed Dr. Rich Allen who provided us with a valuable teacher training day.

Thanks to fellow donors: Reety, Todd, Jason and Diane,  we had another very successful “Cambodia Rice Run” in May.  Despite the heat, we delivered 370 bags of rice to families in need in Siem Riep, including many of our ABCs families.  Each bag of rice will feed them for nearly three months!

We are so grateful for our very generous volunteers and donors like you!  You are making a huge, positive and permanent difference in the lives of hundreds of children and their families at ABCs and Rice!!  Thank you!

We wanted to thank you once again for your kind donations to our school which feeds and educates more than 220 students!

Thanks to your generosity, we have so much news.  Because of an increased number of our high school students, we were happy to triple the size of our night classes.  These students are getting the quality English language education they deserve.

We are proud to announce that we have our first female graduate to be accepted into an agricultural engineering program at Mean Chey University.  You helped her to achieve this!

Without you, none of our students would have been able to attend school, let alone have enough food to eat.

One of our teachers attended the CamTESOL conference  in Phnom Penh in February. Continued teacher development is so important for our students.

We have new friends from Belgium!  Since January we have welcomed 8 Belgian university students who are studying education.  These young teaching interns are developing lessons and observing our teachers. We have now begun to install new classrooms and are accepting enrollment for more students, thanks to the help of you and these Belgian students!

During our intake interviews a few weeks ago,  we met a mother and her young son who have been sleeping on the concrete outside a local hospital.  They collected water bottles during the day in order to afford food to eat. This young boy has never attended school.  Within minutes of meeting with ABCS AND RICE he has been accepted to our school, we found his mother a job and a room to live  which they can now afford.  Thanks to you, this boy will be educated, will eat two hot meals a day at ABCS AND RICE, and will be taking rice home for his mother!!!!

We have also built a strong relationship with the Canadian Executive Service Organization, an international development charity.  Their volunteer advisors will assist us as we continue to achieve our goals of feeding and educating some of the most needy children in Cambodia.

Finally, in February, we partnered once again with MindBe Education, an organization which is dedicated to improving the wellbeing of parents, teachers and students.  We also spoke at the the Mindful Kids Peace Summit.

All of our good news is thanks to the generosity of donors like you.  You are permanently improving the lives of hundreds of children and their families in Cambodia.

Have a wonderful day!

We Have More Great News Thanks To You!

Because of generous donors like you, ABCS AND RICE recently marked our 10th year anniversary.   We celebrated ten years of feeding and educating some of the most needy of children in Cambodia,  by holding another Concert For the Ages as well as a party at our restaurant, Amici. We welcomed many wonderful guests including several of our former students.  Without your generosity, our current and former students would not have been able to thrive let alone succeed in their chosen career paths. Please see our video of the concert on our ABCS and Rice Facebook page.  Our students had an amazing time at the concert and will be singing and dancing what they learned during our celebration for many months to come.

Recently a professional photographer, David Morgan, donated his time and skills to take some amazing photos of our students at ABCS and RICE as well as at our restaurant, Amici’s, which provides regular financial support to our school.  Thanks so much David (www.maketimestandstill.co.uk)  and the great people at Amici’s Italian Restaurant and Pizzeria!

We appreciate the time, energy and money provided to us by generous people like you! Over the past 10 years we have benefitted by over 2000 volunteers.  During our rainy season we enjoy the company of 1 to 2 volunteers per week but during high season we often have as many as 10 to 15 volunteers at once! Come join us!!

Speaking of volunteers, our friends at ABCS and RICE CANADA have been working hard as well.  Several of them braved the cold snowy weather to deliver nearly 500 poinsettias during the Christmas season.  After a few hundred hours of work they raised $4500 Canadian for our deserving children and their families at ABCS and RICE.  Thank you IG Wealth Management (Sudbury, Ontario, Canada) for providing us with this very worthwhile fundraiser.

We really appreciate our generous donors like you and our team of volunteers from around the world.  Together we are making a huge difference in more than 200 children’s lives at ABCS and RICE! Thank you!
