Hello from ABCS and RICE!

By Sharon Terada | Board Member, ABCS and RICE Canada

We wanted to give you, our generous donor, an update.

As you can imagine the pandemic hit us very hard.  Like the other schools here, we lost a majority of our senior students.  Many of them were sent off to work in Cambodia or even in Thailand.  Some of our young women were married off early for the dowry.  During the pandemic we had to close down our Breakfast and Lunch club in order to provide mass weekly food support to the community.  We were forced to sell our school bus to help fund our school and staff.

Thanks to you we have been able to take on more young learners.  We have 14 classes of students. Seven classes attend in the morning and seven attend in the afternoon.  We are able to feed and educate 170 students currently.  We intend on increasing our enrollment this month.  Because other NGO’s have closed their doors, we will prioritize their former students.

Because of your generosity we continue to support the community with monthly or bi-monthly food distribution to 120 families.  We are helping these families find ways to sustain themselves.  Our Lunch club is providing a hot meal for our students.  We will restart the Breakfast Club as soon as we can afford to.

We are happy to announce our new parent volunteer program.  Parents are now required to volunteer for two hours per week at ABCS and Rice.  Their involvement has increased their commitment to their children’s education here.  This program has been a very positive change.

Your generosity continues to help us feed and educate our students.  There is so much more good news but you will have to stay tuned until our next newsletter!

Thank you for your donations and have a great day!
