Today, with this report I will be sharing you the latest update and progress of the project: https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/flood-relief-fund-for-victims-in-nepal/ implemented by Janaki Women Awareness Society (JWAS), Nepal and supported by your valuable donation. This is the second part of the previous report which covers the progress on the construction of Flood Resilient Community Shelters.

With your flood relief donation JWAS is constructing Flood Resilient Community Shelters (Please find the photographs of ongoing construction works of the community shelters below) in low land area of Southern Nepal in Dhanusha district, where affected families will find safe shelters for them during the flood and submerging period. Further these shelters have been designed to fulfill multipurpose need of the local community there. In the flooding period and during other calamities like storm, earthquake, fire etc. these shelters will be used as a shelter house for displaced families and in the normal situation they will be used as centers for community gatherings, conducting meetings,  a place for rest house and  other community functions and ceremonies what so ever is in the need.  These shelters will be equipped with hand pumps for drinking water and safe toilet facilities as well.

We believe your support will have long lasting impact in the community where almost every year hundreds of families are affected due to floods and submerging of their houses in the water for several days.  We keep you updated every three months about the progress of the construction work of the shelters and our works in the community.

Thank you for your generosity and once again many thanks for supporting those, whom you have never seen, never met and never talked to!

Please feel free to contact us for more details.

Today, with this report I will be sharing you the latest update and progress of the project: https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/flood-relief-fund-for-victims-in-nepal/

As per the provision of Nepal’s new constitution and implementation of federal structure for the first time in the history we had to go through 3 – National, Provincial and local elections in the reporting quarter. With the due provision and new arrangement the public land which is to be assigned to us for construction of community shelters should have been passed by the elected representatives of newly formed Village council. So we had to wait till the elections are over for receiving the approval for the public land for the flood resilient community shelters. So, in the reporting quarter we could not start the purposed construction work for flood resilient community shelters. But its preliminary arrangements have all been finalized and now recently we have received the letter from the Village council allocating us the required land for the construction of the shelters.

Construction work will soon start with the finalization of the design estimate and we hope in the coming quarter we would be able to share you more on the flood resilient community shelters.

Once again thank you for your generosity and standing with us during the time of difficulties.

Please feel free to communicate for further information and updates about the project.

Thank you.

Dear Generous Donor,

Namaskar & Greetings from Nepal

Today it is my pleasure to progress updates you on the project you supported for flood victims in Southern Nepal: https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/emergency-flood-relief-fund-for-victims-in-nepal/

In the second week of last August torrential rain and catastrophic flooding have made devastating effects in the normal lives- homes were destroyed, entire neighborhoods submerged, and hundreds of families left their place and belongings to escape rising flood waters. Many parts of the southern Nepal remained in flood waters for 15 days.

Stakeholders in relief support including JWAS approached immediately to the flood victims with medical reliefs, immediate food stuffs, cooking utensils, clothes and tent items. Local police and community leaders were mobilized in between for rescues and distribution of immediate relief items. JWAS local volunteers and staffs oriented communities for water purification method and supplied with Water Guards, Acuqa Tabs, bleaching powders, soaps, bucket and mug for water collection and reservation. They even facilitated for hand washing with soaps in critical times, maintaining proper hygiene behavior and use of toilets and safe defecation.

As the situation was coming slowly in normal and the families were returning back to their places focus were given in reconstruction of local roads damaged in the floods with the involvement of local leaders, communities, volunteers and staffs.

Through this project JWAS is working in one of the lowest areas of Nepal. Flooding and submerging of neighborhoods are common in every monsoon season but the difference this year was that the scale of causalities in lives and properties was significantly higher as compared to previous years. The most vulnerable in the situation always counts for women, children and elderly people from the underprivileged communities as there house structures are not flood resilient and cannot stand firm with the rising water levels during the floods. To support these communities in longer sense as per the demand of the community, JWAS is constructing five flood resilient community shelters through this project in different strategic locations where the victims will have temporary shelters during the floods in every monsoon. These shelters will be equipped with flood resilient toilets and drinking water facilities. Additionally we are also installing 40 floods resilient drinking water hand pumps in underprivileged communities of the flooding areas so people will have access to safe drinking water facilities during the floods in every monsoon.

The work has already been started for construction of the shelters and in our reporting in coming months we’ll be sharing you every progress of the project including the progress on flood resilient community shelter’s construction. This all has become possible through your generosity and love towards the people in the time of need whom you had never met before.  So we value your every donation and assure you that it will be reached to the people you have been desired. But still, we lag behind in the collected fund for construction of five such shelters. So we request all to spread the words to your near and dear ones for funding this project and help us reach many families affected by the floods.

Thank you for your generosity during the time of devastation and looked up with hopes and prayed by many during the period!

Please feel free to contact me for more details.

Thank you once again.
