Children Access To Experiential Science Education

The Mobile Science Lab (MSL) is a powerful and innovative instrument to revolutionize rural education and make hands-on education increasingly accessible. The Mobile Science Lab (MSL) is a powerful and innovative instrument to revolutionize rural education and make hands-on education increasingly accessible. It is a catalytic channel that is fun, engaging and interactive, aimed to raise awareness among disadvantaged children and teachers of the value of learning - with a focus on science. Each MSL travels to the doorstep of remote schools with 100+ hands-on science models covering a wide range of topics in Physics, Chemistry and Biology for Classes 5 through 9. Children are able to relate better to concepts explained through interactive demonstrations rather than through rote learning.

Program Highlights

Community visits were conducted at Soluru, Kodugurki, Muddanayakanahalli, Bommanahalli and Devanahalli.
Young Instructor Training was conducted for 223 students. 11 teachers were a part of it. The schools that took an active role were GHPS Bychapura, GHPS Channahalli, GHPS Kundana and GHPS Anneshwara.
Abdul Kalam Day and World Toilet Day were celebrated at GHPS Anneshwara.
World Pollution Control Day was celebrated at GHS Narayanapura.
A 9-day winter camp was organised at GHPS Venkatagirikote, GHPS Bettakote and GHPS Bychapura in October. Activities related to Talent Search, Team Building, Leadership, and Indoor and Outdoor games took place where all 452 girls actively participated.

Topics covered were:

Air, Atoms and Molecules, Human Torso, Periodic Table, Magnetism, Metal and Non-Metal, Reproduction in animals, Physical & Chemical Change, Skeletal System, Respiration, Light and Mirror, Human Anatomy, Sound, Reflection of Light, Food and Nutrition, Light and Shadow.

Curious questions from children?

Why do animals reproduce?
Is boiling water a chemical change?
Who is the father of the periodic table?
Why are all metals magnetic?
Why do our noses have two nostrils?
Where in my body is the original cell from which I was formed?
Why image is not formed in the convex lens?
How much do all the bones in the body weigh?
Where does our home wastewater go?

Feedback

For one week we attended the winter camp conducted by Agastya. In the camp, the teacher taught us paper activities, low-cost model making, photosynthesis, quadrilaterals, optical instruments, measurement, kick racket, and some topics related to theatre activities. We played fun games at this camp. Thanking Agastya and the team.

There was a class on cells and microscopes today by Agastya. I saw an amoeba, euglena and paramecium under the microscope for the first time. I learnt more about each of the microorganisms, and how to handle the slide materials in this class. I am very thankful to Agastya and please be visiting us again and again.

The concept of light was taught in today's class by doing hands-on activities using different models like Deep well, Optic kit, and One-object Eleven images. Agastya's teacher was so keen on making us experience each activity practically. I learned and the idea become very easy for me. I think I can remember this class for a long time.

During vacation, our students were involved more interestingly in the camp. It helped them to enhance their practical knowledge. Also, I saw every day they learnt various topics in different manners. I am very thankful to madam and their team.

School Sessions: Conducted regular science sessions on different topics like natural resources, properties of natural resources, force, Work and Energy, and Periodic Table and conducted activities of these topics and students enjoyed it so much. Mobile Lab intends to reach out to rural and underprivileged children, to deliver hands-on science in line with Agastya’s mission. Through School visits covered 17 schools and 1,900 unique children in 6^th-9^th Std grade Children. Till September 2022 reached 11,963 exposures.

Community Visit: Conducted community visit sessions in and around school locations and demonstrated some models like human body parts, respiratory system, Circulatory System, Digestive System etc. Sensitize communities and parents of children about the importance of educationand motivate them to send their children to schools And also created awareness about health to community people. Till September 2022 reached 65 Community visits and 5291 exposures.

Science Fair: Arranged one science fair and 1,600 students visited science fair and conducted low-cost model making training to all 47 YIL’s (Young Instructor Leader) students and they enjoyed making models. The objective of the science fair was to facilitate peer-to-peer teaching learning among school kids, Enhanced access to hands-on science by demonstrating simple science models, Show case leadership of kids and create platform for kids to showcase their scientific skills. Organized Science fair in CSI HSS Melrosapuram. We reached 80 YI’s and 1,563 children get benefitted.

Summer Camp: Four summer camps organized in five different locations 1. Padappai, 2. MM Nagar, 3. Mannivakkam, 4. Kaattur, 5. Gandhi Nagar. Activities conducted like origami activities, creative painting and drawing, team building games and curious low-cost model activity, Team unity games and magical science activities, personality development game and fashion dress competition with using newspaper and leadership Activity game. Through camp activities reached 1382 exposures.

Special Awareness program: Conducted science awareness program reaching out to other schools also. Created Science awareness in school children and teachers.
organizing Science Fairs and Sessions on school holidays and Saturdays.

Activities conducted last quarter for the beneficiaries supported:

EPL initiative (Explore, Play & Learn): EPL is an initiative with the core objective of taking Agastya sessions to the student’s home and providing the same Agastya experience to the students. Promoting the self-learning and self-exploring capacities of students and enables to learn through their household materials and daily life situations.
EPL 2.0 Program: On seeing the wonderful response given by students to EPL 1.0 we tried to extend this program to the next extent and launched EPL 2.0 program. We created whatsapp groups for every standard from each instructor. We designed the module such that we get exactly one week for each chapter. In this we took initiative even for clearing all the doubts of the children, and in order to do so we gave the contact numbers of our I.M.T instructors to the students. We even conducted online exams for the students on every topic in the weekends.
YIL Program: conducted YIL program activities in GHPS Satyamangala and GHPS Aralimaradapaly school. Students prepared the light topic low-cost models preparation and using leaf-made diagrams of animals.
Online Winter Camp: on 11^th to 20^th conducted online winter camp through Google meet. our program schools and nonprogram schools students joined by doing activities like low-cost model making, craftwork, rangoli drawing, design using leaves, etc. All students actively participated in the winter camp. Totally boys 276, Girls- 365 and Teachers- 24, Grand total- 665.
Science Fair: Conducted Science Fair on 12^th January 2022 at GHPS Beladhara. Students and teachers participated in this program. Displayed a total of 31 models, including Biology, physics, and chemistry. After Mr. Balakrishna KR (Head Master GHPS Bealadhara ) explained about the importance of science in our daily life and this type of program are helpful for students. In this program totally Boys 185, Girls- 245, and Teachers-13, Community members-22, YIL Boys -17, YIL Girls -14 total: 496 participated.
Community Visit: Conducted community visits in selected areas like ShettihalliPalya, Bommanahalli, Aregujjanahalli, Durgadahalli, and other villages. And explained about Pavada Rahasya Bayalu, awareness about superstition belief and a healthy environment in villages. This program is benefitted to people. It gives a scientific attitude and the importance of scientific experiments for people. Totally covered Boys-74, Girls-78, Men-51, and Community Women-50, Total:253 participated.
Teacher Training Program: On 21^st January conducted “Teacher training program" via google meet platform. Topics covered like light, shadow and reflection, light, transparent materials, translucent materials, opaque materials, how the shadow is formed, types of mirrors, characteristics of image formation in a plane mirror, types of curved mirrors, image formation in a concave mirror, use of the convex mirror and concave mirror, types of images, etc... Teachers actively participated in training and cleared doubts. Totally 46 teachers participated.
School Visit: Conducted face-to-face classes to students, and reached students from 6^th to 10^th standard. Covered topics in science subject for 6^th to 10^th std. Topics covered are as light, electricity, water, air, states of matter, measurement of distance, and sound.
