On October 2nd, 2020 Dufatanye Organization (DO) finished delivering and distributing the vegetable and tree resources to Kabisine. The 105 villagers gathered together with 10 leaders elected to manage the distribution of trees, vegetables and manure, as well as, monitor and evaluation of their groups kitchen garden. DO distributed 10 improved banana suckers, 2 fruit trees and vegetable seedlings to every beneficiary. A total distribution of 5,460 vegetables and fruit for the dry mountainous village of Kabisine.

The VOH Kabisine project ran from June – October of 2020. The beneficiaries learned the proper cultivation of bananas and the importance of creating a kitchen garden on their slopey hillsides for soil retention. Now every beneficiary has a means of vegetables growing outside their door and should not go to bed hungry. Even 1 beneficiary was ingenious and created 3 kitchen gardens outside his home, by using dead banana trunks. He was very excited to show us his ingenuity and Dufatanye was extremely happy to see his self-motivation and example to everyone in the village.

The laying hens was one of our more difficult piece of the project. Some of the beneficiaries thought we were tricking them because no one would give chickens out for free. The laying hens needed more specific care and protection than the beneficiaries had never known, so they learned the proper treatment of them. Some hens were lost to thieves and birds. The exotic breed DO distributed grows faster and lays longer than the local breed. This will provide them with eggs for a longer season than they have experienced in the past. “My malnutrition is now history,” spoken by a beneficiary.

Trauma training was taught 3 days with everyone in attendance and very attentive to the knowledge they were gaining about stress, trauma, symptoms, forgiveness, grief, etc. After the last class 2 of the villagers walked with the staff and shared their thoughts on the class. One lady said, “my mother and I have been distant for 4 years. I learned from the class that I needed to work things out with her and forgive her. I did! And now we are working on building our relationship again. I feel so free now.” Mark shared his thought about his life and the loss of his aunt, “this class helped me to let go of some of my past pains and move forward in life.” Maybe this year he will be able to celebrate Christmas again.

DO began it’s 3rd VOH-Nyabisindu on October 23rd working with 58 widows. Please share our program link with your friends and help us to continue spreading the improved agricultural practices and decrease malnutrition in the Southern Province of Rwanda.

Fighting Malnutrition in Nyanza – Village of Hope Kabisine

Due to Coronavirus, Rwanda was locked down from March 22 – until June 1. Movement, gathering of people and businesses were shut down. This prevented us from beginning the new Village of Hope project in Kabisine until 2 weeks ago. The immediate need was for food to survive the almost 3 month lockdown, so Dufatanye raised the funds to distribute food on a daily basis reaching over 40,000 people in desperate need.

We started the Village of Hope project with training the village on how to rear laying hens. We followed Covid19 guidelines and split the trainings into 2 groups, so that people could keep their distance. Our trainers went to the village and met with the people out in the sun and explained for them how to feed, water, care for chickens, as well as, disease and nests.

The people were super excited to have Dufatanye Organization come and train them. They still can’t believe that anyone cares about them this much to take the time and help them to grow in their agricultural knowledge. We had 105 of the village attend the training and then each received 2 laying hens to begin their opportunity to receive eggs daily and begin to grow a business. A total of 210 laying hens were distributed to 105 attendees.

Two of the attendees were chosen to be the ones to weekly check in on the students and the health of their chickens. This has been a great start to Village of Hope Kabisines chance to improve their agricultural practices, community and village sustainability. They are excited to have this opportunity and Dufatanye is happy to see them grow, improve and bring themselves out of extreme poverty.

Thank you donors.

The staff of Dufatanye Organization were trained on village/household assessments, and then took a 30-minute motorcycle ride from Nyanza to Kabisine for assessing the newest Village of Hope project. Kabisine is up in the mountains outside of Nyanza where the car path changes to a motorcycle path and ultimately a footpath.

We discovered that the village is the most impoverished in the District. It is the lowest village of a categorized list. We heard from the people that they were surprised we had come because they thought everyone had forgotten about them. They were happy to see the staff of Dufatanye and answer questions to determine their hierarchy of needs. Their needs are vast and many. They suffer from lack of many basic necessities, a harsh living environment and need intervention in a big way.

One of the villagers is a 90 year old man, his home fell down in the last rain, so he is renting a tiny place (rat infested), has no one to help him and no money. Some days he goes without water or food, sometimes his neighbors help him out. He needs our desperately needs our support.

See the attached report for more details..and thank you for supporting this village.
