Dear Friends,
Each 24th of May is special day in Bulgaria - this is when we celebrate the power of knowledge and culture as well as the Cyrillic script. We hope you have celebrated on 24th of May, as you have a specific reason to do so - you contribute to more knowledge for all Bulgarian children, in their own script and language! Have a look what we have achieved together for the past three months - and continue celebrating:
Newly translated STEM subjects: Physics and Cosmology and Astronomy
The number of courses available in Bulgarian is constantly growing! In the past months, we have been focusing on our Science content, so check out our two new courses available in Bulgarian – Physics and Cosmology & Astronomy, with the support of our main partner, the America for Bulgaria Foundation!
Math and Physics courses according to Bulgarian state curricula
We really want that more and more Bulgarian students are able to profit as much as possible from Khan Academy. For most of them, learning according to Bulgarian state curricula is very important. But until very recently, it wasn’t possible for us to custom the site to meet these needs. Not anymore! Just go to our Math section, and see for yourself – the top math courses correspond to the Bulgarian 1st to 8th grades! We are not stopping there and continue working on the Physics section: 7th grade is already available – stay tuned for more Bulgarian courses coming soon.
Our “Math voices and hands” - meet our new team of video recreaters
Recently we started a new approach of localizing video lessons from Khan Academy - we do not just translate them, we “recreate” them. This works perfect, and it is so much fun! We selected 4 highly motivated people for recreating the athematics videos in Bulgarian language and handwriting. Our Math recreators team consist of 4 highly motivated people: Gergana Paneva, Rositsa Stoyneva, Maria Tsoncheva and Miroslav Ivanov. They managed to recreate 300+ videos for 2,5 months, adapting some exercises and examples to be closer to Bulgarian everyday life and our educational system. If you are curious how it sounds and looks like - check out the link below!
Science festival with Khan Academy!
For a third year we participated at the Sofia Science Festival, organised by British Council and Sofia Municipality (May 2019). This is the biggest science event for children and families in Bulgaria and we had our own stand there. We met many kids, parents, teachers and students eager to tell us that they already know Khan Academy and they are used to watching the videos. A student in the 12th grade confessed that he would have never passed his biology exam if it wasn’t the Khan Academy biology course! Some teachers came to thank us for the tremendous efforts of translating and dubbing the videos! And, on our side, we want to thank YOU for supporting this!
New teachers' training launched
Together with our partners from the Center for Creative Training we developed a „Workshop on innovative educational practices”. It gives teachers the space to share their challenges with students, and afterwards we look together for ways to deal with them, by sharing and assessing examples from all around the world. In April and May 2019 we organized the first 2-day training sessions, thus empowering more teachers to innovate and bring their students forward.
We also continued with our trainings on Khan Academy and other digital tools for Math and primary teachers - with one held in Sofia in May and one in Plovdiv, in April.

Happy 24th of May :)
You remember how we started this report? Exactly - with the significance of 24th of May for Bulgarian society. In order to celebrate it online, together with Viber and Linbots we launched a new thematic category in our Khan Academy chatbot. Check out the Happy 24th May :) section and find interesting facts and fun challenging questions about this national holiday and its symbolic power.
School visits and smiley faces
We are always happy to meet our users in person and understand how important our work is for them. Thanks to our main partner America for Bulgaria, we were able to visit schools in different places in Bulgaria - in Pravets, Lovech, Milkovitsa, and the Regional Library in Lovech city and to meet many more new friends!
Their feedback and smiley faces are priceless to us!
In the near future:
Meanwhile some of our fans are helping us to test the long awaited Khan Academy mobile application in Bulgarian language. We hope to be live soon. Stay tuned!
To make it really happen:
Please become a monthly donor, if you aren’t yet, and help us bring such and more advancements quicker to Bulgarian children! Or at least tell your friends about us. Every little donation helps a big change become real!
Thank you!
