Goodbye 2021, welcome new Khan Academy content!

New Khan Academy content for 2022

Dear Friends,

The end of the year and 2021 as a whole was very fruitful for our activities - Khan Academy in Bulgarian expanded with 5 new courses for the last 4 months! We also have been joined by more like-minded people – teachers, experts and volunteers, and this gives us additional confidence in our cause.

Here is what we have achieved together, with the great support of people like you:

Khan Academy: 5 new courses are waiting for you!

There are 5 new courses at Khan Academy Bulgarian site!

Mathematics: We are very happy that we completed and published the 12th grade math courses according to the new Bulgarian curriculum – they are 3 courses: General education and review section; Practical Mathematics; Probabilities, and Data Analysis. This was possible thanks to the unresting work of our wonderful experts Katerina Marcheva and Raina Pavlova!

Science: The Stanford University School of Medicine course was developed in collaboration with Stanford University and explains several diseases in detail. It will be of great benefit to those wishing to apply for medicine, as well as for medical students; and to anyone interested.

Computing: In the new course of Code.org employees from Spotify, Microsoft, Amazon and other global companies reveal the secrets of the world of computers and the Internet. Have a look (link below)!

Volunteers are our hidden strength!

New TimeHeroes Mission: At the end of November 2021, we launched a new volunteer mission at TimeHeroes.org for the translation of Khan Academy course "Computers and the Internet". 45 candidates applied to help us provide more quality content for free in Bulgarian. Currently, we are working with 6 of the most dedicated volunteers among them, and 30% of the content is already translated (appr. 70,000 words for less than 2 months)!

Further pro bono translators are actively translating educational content from different topics like Finance, History of Art, Resources for Teachers (content for which we weren't able to secure the funding yet). For the past 4 months, they have done a great job translating 90 videos and 72,000 words in articles and exercises!

Volunteers help with much more: Volunteers support us also with activities related to communication and promotion of Khan Academy, even high school students are among them! Moreover, 5 business leaders started supporting our management team with expert counseling on the fundraising, key partnership and visibility strategy of the organization.

Khan Academy localization for the period October 2021 – January 2022

Translation:

632,500 words (Math, Resources, Computing, California Academy of Science) and 168 videos (Math, Finance, Art History, Resources).

Proofreading:

640,300 words and 199 videos (673 minutes) in similar subjects as the translated content.

Experts’ work:

Our Physics expert reviewed terminologically 34 articles and exercises and 96 videos; our Biology expert reviewed terminologically 182 videos.

Webinars for teachers

During this reporting period we also organized 4 free training events for teachers in order to support them to apply digital technologies and new practices in their work..

“Education Without Backpacks” and Khan Academy at Webit Global Impact Week

On December 14, we participated in Powers Summit, part of Webit Global Impact Week – a conference meeting the government with the business and the civil sector. Our messages in the Education panel discussion were:

The need for smart digitalization
Khan Academy as a good practice and an example for smart, more effective digitalization
Khan Academy as a mission - free world-class education to anyone, anywhere, anytime, one click away
The need for the government to “hear the voice” of teachers, students and experts more often and more actively.

We are glad that the Minister of Education and representatives of all leading political formations represented in Parliament participated actively and gave their perspective, reaffirming the common vision for smart digitalization in education.

Inspiration exists, but it must find us working!

Dear Friends,

Working with inspiration makes everything easier, but inspiration must find you working! For the past four months we have been working hard and this is why inspiration has never left us! We are happy to be able to continue to work with inspiration and to inspire in turn teachers and students to work hard and achieve excellent results.

Here is what we have achieved together, with the support of people like you:

Math, History and Programming students’ contests with Khan Academy

Our three students' contests with Khan Academy for the last school year finished in June 2021. Thanks to our amazing sponsors from Chaos, the U.S. Embassy in Bulgaria, Ozone.bg, Bulgarian History and Launchee we were able to award 36 out of more than 100 amazing students and 8 of the most engaged teachers! The contestants were from all over Bulgaria - big cities, small towns, even villages. This really is a great proof that Khan Academy is inspiring anyone anywhere. We were absolutely amazed by the results of the best performing students: Victoria for example spent over 2234 minutes in learning with Khan Academy for the three months of the contests! As part of the awarding ceremony, some of the winners had the possibility to meet and exchange with the U.S. Ambassador in Bulgaria and with representatives from Chaos who told them more about the company which was honored with the Sci-tech Oscar in 2017.

Khan Academy: What’s new?

This summer Khan Academy launched some brand new courses in Science and many new content in Math. We have already managed to translate the new course Environmental science. And we are proud to have our very first piece of local content in the Meet the Biologists section on Khan Academy in Bulgarian – an interview with the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences researcher and “climate ambassador” Kalina.

We continue with the translation of the new math content and with adding it to all the Bulgarian courses. Furthermore, our math experts are doing a great job in aligning the 12th grade course on Khan Academy according to the new Bulgarian curriculum. Their efforts aim for the course to be ready and alive on the site in November 2021 so that all 12-graders can find relevant materials and prepare for their final exams.

And last but not least, our devoted volunteers have meanwhile translated 40+ videos from the Finance and Capital Markets course on Khan Academy!

Stronger in Mathematics with Khan Academy - our new program

The aim of our new program for Math teachers is to support them in using Khan Academy actively and to assess the impact of Khan in Bulgaria. We hope to be able to bring clear facts and figures about the ways Khan Academy supports students and teachers locally. We have 160 Math teachers from 70 locations registered for this new initiative. The program is supported by the America for Bulgaria Foundation and the Ministry of Education already underlined its interest in the results. The renowned Institute for Research in Education will be responsible for the impact assessment itself.

Translation: 81,1K words and 99 videos (713 min) (Environmental science, Resources for Teachers and Students, Finance, Art history)
Proofreading: 421,5K words and 246 videos (2020 minutes) (Math, Environmental science, Resources for Teachers, Finance, Art history)

Khan Academy usage growth

For the past 4 months, June - September 2021, we had:

Users growth: 17.90% (compared to the same period in 2019 as 2020 was unprecedented)
Sessions growth: 16.77% (compared to the same period in 2019 as 2020 was unprecedented)

Khan Academy released new “Khan for Educators” videos

For the new school year, Khan Academy’s Headquarters released 8 new videos with tips for teachers on how to motivate students, how to use videos, assignment and assignment reports on Khan and many more. We are really happy that we managed to motivate volunteers to translate them timely. So these videos can be now of good use to all teachers across Bulgaria that engage their students to master skills and classes with Khan!

Hitting the reset button: A better normal after the pandemic!

Dear Friends,

The past four months were a kind of restart for the entire world. Even though there are still countries that fight the horrible virus, a sense of hope is in the air and we are fast to catch it! A restart to our normal ways of life, a refresh to our daily effectiveness, a reviving of our optimal functioning is what we work for! We are happy to be able to build a better normal after the pandemic.

Here is what we have achieved together, with the support of people like you:

Khan Academy: Translation of all available videos, exercises and articles from Physics, Biology and Chemistry, and strong volunteers’ support for translation and expert check of Finance and Capital Markets course

We managed to complete the translation of all videos, exercises and articles available on Khan as of now in the Physics, Chemistry and Biology courses, and some newly added materials. Proofreading and experts’ check will follow in the next few months.

We continue with proofreading of videos and exercises in the Math courses - in Algebra, High School Geometry and Multivariable calculus.

We gathered a team of devoted volunteers for translating the Finance and Capital Markets course, and they have already translated 80+ videos in 4 months!

Localization results for the period February 2021 – May 2021:

Translation: 185 K words (Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Finance) and 219 videos (14 in Health and Medicine; 5 in Physics; 42 in Biology; 87 in Finance; 71 in Chemistry)
Proofreading: 333 K words (Math, Finance) and 224 Math videos (1707 minutes)

Khan Academy usage growth

For the past 4 months, February 2021 - May 2021, we had:

Sessions: 105.05% growth compared to the same period in 2019 (compared to the same period in 2020, when due to the pandemic we had unprecedented usage, we have -52.06%)
Users: 89.04% growth compared to the same period in 2019 (compared to the same period in 2020, we have -37.15%).

Impact assessment of Khan Academy in Bulgaria - “Data for Quality Education” Programme for schools

At the start of the coming school year 2021/2022, we are launching a programme for entire schools and their Math teachers around Khan Academy. The aim of the programme is to research the impact of Khan Academy on students and Math teachers in Bulgaria, while supporting those teachers and their schools in using technologies and the great functionalities of Khan in their practice. We hope that at the end of 2022 we could present clear evidence and data about the positive effects of working with the platform in Bulgarian conditions.

Amazing results of the “Antifragility through cloud solutions” project

As this project came to an end, we would like to give a big thanks to our partners from the Sofia Development Association and Sofia Municipality!

With their support we started using Amazon Web Services so that we can make quicker and deeper analyses of data on education in Bulgaria - thus we hope to start providing a solid basis for decision making both for our initiatives and for institutional policies. We also have a brand new web page that you can visit (link below) (for now it’s running only in Bulgarian but we are currently working on its English version). We already have an annual subscription to SendInBlue - so you can subscribe to our new and redesigned e-newsletter in Bulgarian (link below)!

Salman Khan’s book “The One World Schoolhouse: Education Reimagined” - translated in Bulgarian

Thanks to our partners from “East-West” Publishing Salman Khan’s book “The One World Schoolhouse: Education Reimagined” is already available in Bulgarian! We are very happy to be able to inspire Bulgarian teachers through Khan’s revolutionary point of view on the school system. As the pandemic made digital classrooms possible all over the world, we can no longer turn our backs to transformation of education, covered in various aspects in Sal’s book.

You can help us keep working for better normal after the pandemic! More than ever students, teachers, institutions need to adapt while evaluating what happened to all of us in the last 1,5 years. The pandemic showed us that we can be creative and flexible, and that we need to take special care of our children - the future leaders! To do so we need to give them more of the best instruments available to succeed.
