COVID pandemic has severely impacted on the Children with Developmental Delays. Also, there was no clue of when the lockdown would be totally lifted so that we can start our activists in full swing. However, we have quickly overcome this situation and started online therapy to children with special need so that the children do not miss their therapy. We never wanted the children to miss their therapy, which is valuable and must for them, most of our children hailing from rural poor background do face certain difficulties of online but we guide their parents and convince them about the importance. At this critical time, we are striving hard to impart quality online therapy to our children, so that they do not miss. As you know, Amar Seva Sangam has the twin responsibility of shouldering the inmates, school children and other persons with disabilities, who are all more vulnerable for the virus as also the financial requirements that we need to constantly build up.

The spread of the Corona virus world over is causing unimaginable hardships and human losses with no definite end of the pandemic in sight.  Due to its large scale negative impact and unimaginable spread, the fight against COVID 19 has become the utmost priority one.

The 2-year peer reviewed study published in the October issue of Disability and Rehabilitation shows that providing community-based, family-centred Early Intervention program that includes training and education to parents of Children with Developmental Delays leads to reduced emotional, physical and financial strain leading to increased family empowerment and well-being.

Parents of children with disabilities face higher demands than their peers who do not have children with disabilities. This is particularly seen in low- and middle-income countries, because of barriers like difficulties in reaching Early Intervention Centres, non-availability of Rehab specialists and cost. They are further burdened by social stigma and lack of awareness in the society.

Study done in eight blocks of Tenkasi District where the Early Intervention program is provided at their own homes eliminates the above barriers. The well-being of a child is influenced by the well-being of their parents. Access to such programs improve care for such children leading to their empowerment and well being. Amar Seva Sangam has created a highly successful and affordable Home Based Early Intervention Model by using GPS based mobile technology by which the early intervention services are provided at the doorstep of children with developmental delays through a network of community workers and Rehab specialists using mobile phones.

Due to the various strict protocols and lockdown in place, we are unable to carry out our regular outreach and other related activities of our Early Intervention for children with developmental delays. We will take up all the activities with all seriousness once the present pandemic is over and the atmosphere becomes condusive to carry on with our programs.

Amar Seva Sangam have a centre for Early Intervention, the idea behind EIC is to intervene as early as possible and minimize disability so that the child can reach the highest potential. Research has shown that the period from birth to 6 years are the most critical years for all children, and more so for children with disabilities. Growth and development of a child is at its greatest in the first two to three years. During this phase of cognitive development, foundations of intelligence and behaviour begin to evolve. Additionally, ability of brain to affect structural and functional changes is at its best in this period. If the child misses this opportunity, further learning will be slow and / or inadequate. Early intervention programs work towards quicker inclusion of these children into the mainstream.
